Any other plus size ladies out there get absolutely frustrated with dress shopping?

I am probably a 24/26 and I am had such an awful time dress shopping yesterday. I am so mad because I really like Allure dresses, so I searched through their website to find shops that carried them. I found two, made appointments, and had my mom, sister, and best friend come up (they live 3 hours away). I specifically asked about Allure dresses and said I wore a 24 or 26. Both stores assured me they would have a lot for me to try on. I had a list of 15 Allure dresses I wanted to try on ,and a couple from other lines. I didn't expect them to have all of them in my size, but they didn't have ANY. Not ONE. Not even close to my size to get an idea. Then she showed me the dresses - They had maybe 20 dresses in my size, and most of them were blingy or strapless, which I don't want. I tried on maybe 4 dresses. She kept trying to get me to hold the dresses up to myself and see how they looked.

I had very mixed experiences dress shopping. Most of my shopping was at boutiques (No DB or AA) and I had fantastic experiences at 2 and a terrible experience at 1. I did call ahead and asked about their plus-size sample selection, and was happy to find one store with a "Diva Sample Section" where they put all their plus size samples in one area, luckily they also carried the designer I was interested in and had samples in my size. The store I didn't like either didn't care about me, or lied about their selections, cuz I wear an 18/20 and they brought a lot of 8/10 samples to me. That felt terrible. After that appointment, I knew I would buy from the other store, b/c of their dresses and their consultants.

Just take the time and try multiple places, and you'll find the right dress!!

I went to david's bridal about 3 months ago and the consultant was horrible. My sister went it the back to find dresses for me! I just went to david's bridal again (different location). I had the best experience. I am a size 14 and they seemed to have a lot of different styles. I found the perfect dress. They have a david's brial in PA. Have you tried that?

GURL! I totally understand I went last weekend at Nordstrom’s and when I made the appointment I asked if they had the types of dresses I was looking for in a 18-20 got there and nope nothing even close.... but they said they’d try to get some in and they’d email if they could but this time of year it’s hard to get a hold of those dresses! now I’m trying to find places that carry similar dresses and it’s like nope... just make an appointment and hope .... sorry you had to go through this too! Hang in there tho! I’m thinking I might try anomalie

Lord have MERCY do I feel for you. I went to DB and apparently even with a budget of $1k (before alts) their plus size selection was something to laugh at!

My consultant kept bringing me dresses that were super tiny. Like, couldn’t get beyond my hips tiny and when I would refuse to come out and “showcase” the dress for my mom, my mom had to come inside (the tiny tiny closet of a dressing room) to see what was wrong and when my mom then told her I’m not coming out cuz the dress didn’t fit/was too small, the consultant said “that’s what the clips are for”. Like honey no. That’s when the DRESS is too big, I can’t even get the thing ON!

She then went on to bring me a couple of gowns that were closer to my size but...I looked at their tags and they were over budget. I didn’t even bother trying them. My consultant wasn’t a good listener and liked to just disappear. She gave me a size EIGHT crinoline skirt to wear to help poof out my gowns. I felt like she was either confusing me with another bride that morning or she had just zero experience with a bigger bride. They didn’t even have most of any of the dresses I had faved online on my account, and the two they did, weren’t big enough to try on.

Needless to say I felt sweaty, frustrated, humiliated, and just plain caste aside. I was ready to storm out and just forget about dress shopping and just get married in a ripped cocktail gown I wore to homecoming like 10yrs prior. Thankfully however, prior to me walking out the door in hushed tears and embarrassment, my mom asked about the single dress I had my heart set on. There was a debacle about if it was even available for order but we eventually got it sorted and the dress arrived a month later.

On a whole other tangent, my mom seems to think I’m bigger than I am and kept telling my independent seamstress who I went to that I was a 26 (I’m a 22 apparently). So that was fun to hear her say in front of strangers.

But I feel you girl, clothes shopping always makes me feel less than dignified, rather than excited and beaming.

(Also oops didn’t notice this was a 6yr old thread that got bumped! Lol)
