Plus ones

Ashlie, on August 31, 2020 at 9:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 35
Has anyone had issues with people rsvping with a plus one? It’s people who are single and i addressed the envelope to them specifically. Thankfully we had to post pone our wedding to next May so I’m trying to figure out a good way to say no plus ones?

That's frustrating! You could reach out to them and say that unfortunately, you aren't able to give them a plus one due to limited space. They should be understanding of that.

You have to be blunt and say you have space limitations, which is true with Covid. Anyone who rsvps with extras you didn't invite, get in touch with them immediately.

Yea! It’s frustrating. I ended up never actually confronting them because once I had people who said no it just balanced out but it really is frustrating

I agree with Lisa and Jana - politely decline the +1 because of seat limitations.

In any event, no one should RSVP with a +1 unless they have been allocated a +1

I agree that you should immediately reach out and say no plus ones. Also consider adding an FAQ to your website about this

I would totally use COVID as an excuse and the limited number of attendees. Tell them no!

What did you do?! Do they have a ton of kids or did they just assume they can bring all of their buddies like it's their party?

Use covid as an excuse to no plus one. Also consider using a website to RSVP on where there is no option for the person to have a guest or if by mail say we reserved 1 seat for you so maybe they’d get the point

Wow, I'm surprised people still do this. My FH has a brother who seriously won't attend family reuinions nor weddings if he doesn't have a date. It's such a shame. I recommend you call guests up and explain the rule due to costs and covid restrictions.

I would definitely reach out to them and kindly let them know that the invite was only for them. As people mentioned before, COVID can easily be an excuse if you don't want to just tell people no

I had 2 different people ask if they had a +1. Both invitations were directly to THEM only. At least they asked right? I politely told them no because we want to have a small intimate wedding. Well we had to postpone our reception and when one of those original people got their Change The Date they had the nerve to ask “So do I get a +1 to this now or no?” SO annoying and rude!!

We simply included a note regarding Covid outlining that invites are limited to those specifically invited. Perhaps you could do something similar for May.

If you're sending out new invites, you could try the "X number of seats reserved in your honor" tactic on the RSVP.

This is a really old thread, but it has an example: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/rsvps-and-those-who-used-number-of-seats-reserved-in-your-honor/968c53e735a26834.html

Of course, people might still try to RSVP with a +1, but I think this wording makes it very clear.
