Please help! ball gown or mermaid?

Nikita, on August 26, 2014 at 2:02 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 16

1st, I wanted a ball gown because that's without a doubt a WEDDING GOWN. It can't be mistaken for a red carpet or prom or bridesmaid evening gown at all. And I want to feel like a total bride on my wedding day (blah blah blah)

2nd, I know mermaid looks better on my body. Annnnd I'm changing into a traditional Nigerian dress during the reception, which I plan on getting custom made into a mermaid style. (Best of both worlds)

3rd, I accidentally tried on a Mermaid wedding gown and it looks so good I can't stop thinking about it. Ya know... It's Sexier so FH would definitely love it Smiley smile So now I'm mad/torn because I didn't want to do the double mermaid dress thing. Wedding is in January if that matters?

I was for sure I didn't want a ball gown, but when I tried them on I felt so bridal. I tried on some trumpet and mermaid gowns and they looked awesome on! I ended up going with a ball gown. At the end of the day, go with whatever dress makes you feel like a bride Smiley smile

Whichever one makes you smile the most. Both styles are gorgeous. I'm a ballgown bride but there are parts of me that sort of in the back of my mind think HE would have loved the mermaid on me.

Get the damn mermaid dress. If you don't, you will end up regretting not getting the dress you really wanted the minute you purchase your ball gown. Get what makes YOU feel best though (not your FH). He will love how amazing you look no matter what gown you pick!

I also kind of thought about the ball gown screaming BRIDE! but when I tried a couple on, I felt so over whelmed in them. I ended up with a sheath dress and looked very bridal. DH loved how it looked too Smiley smile

Before I tried dresses on, I thought there was no way I wanted a mermaid style. Until I tried that style on. That is what I am wearing on my wedding day and I absolutely feel like a bride in it. You need to go with what you truly want and no one else can tell you what that may be.

It's OK to let go of the "vision" you have about a ball gown being a definite wedding dress. In a white mermaid style dress you're still clearly going to be the bride!

I had my heart set on an a-line dress and fell in LOVE with a mermaid dress - a change in vision is OK Smiley smile

Ball gown! you're right that it's something where your wedding is close to the only time you can wear it Smiley smile

did you not find a ball gown that you liked? if not, then go with what you like best.

I have no interest in anything but a ball gown. anything smaller I can just wear out to dinner or other events. Smiley smile

there's a lot of mental blocks on ball gowns, but women of all ages and sizes wore them throughout time and looked magnificent. there's a lot of different types of ball gowns. if you don't want the 'cup cake' dresses, there's other styles.

do you have any pictures? might be able to help you choose a look.

I LOVE mermaid dresses. For me, the ballgown was not it. I'd say go with the one that makes you feel like the beautiful bride you want to be.

The first shop I went to tried to sell me on a mermaid, but I hated the way they looked on me. I don't have a waist that curves in very dramatically (I have big tatas but an athletic build) and I thought I looked like a sausage in a tutu. Mermaids can be gorgeous, but they seem very trendy to me, and I am a timeless classic kind of girl. Ballgowns were a little over-the-top form me. I ended up with a charmeuse sheath that I adore. Moral of the story: don't get stuck on one silhouette. Try lots, and buy what you feel most beautiful in. Women come in all shapes and sizes, and so do wedding gowns! Have fun!

Because of your outfit changes, I would suggest you get two distinctly different gowns so that you get to experience the best of both worlds. Plus Nigerian weddings tend to be awesomely lavish...Go head and get that $25,000, rhinestoned out, princess, lace, bejeweled ball gown...You deserve it!

Hahaha! Oh Riki I'd love to get any $25,000 wedding dress, but it's not happening.

It is nice if he loves it. But that will probably happen with whatever you select.
