Platinum or white gold?

Lori, on February 24, 2014 at 6:49 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

Hi all, recently went shopping for wedding bands and I was quite surprised to find out i have a white gold band - I thought it was plantinum. Its starting to fade/turn yellow right now (been engaged for 3 years). Im thinking of changing the setting to Platinum.

Just wondering what the consensus is out there.. any advice?

Can you have it redipped? Mine is white gold and I know I will have to keep up with it because I have white gold rings in the past and have had a reaction to not having it dipped.

I have platinum and I'm very happy I do. It is more expensive but totally worth it in the end. It is super durable and hardly needs maintenance. I know it will last forever. It looks beautiful too. If you have the money I would definitely upgrade.

Yeah i hate that redipping thing - not a big fan of leaving my ring at store to get re-dipped

Platinum has a higher upfront cost but lower maintenance costs later. I went that route with FH's band.

I had a white gold ring for years and it never turned any color. I never even heard of having to get it re-dipped.

My current ring is white gold, but the setting of the diamond is platinum.

If you stay with white gold, be careful when using hand sanitizer. My jewler warned that it will destroy the plating quickly.

Having a ring replated can be a pain, but it depends on the jeweler. Mine will do it same day and will do it for free once a year. I have a non-engagement ring that is platinum, and I can't say that I'm impressed enough with it to justify the added cost. I chose to have a larger diamond rather than upgraded metal.

What about palladium? It's similar in quality, strength, and maintenance needs to platinum, but costs less than white gold.

I have a platinum engagement ring and we bought a platinum wedding band to go with it (so that there was no difference in color over time).

My personal suggestion would be to go with platinum, unless your fiance would be offended you changed it. If he is or would be, I'd stick with the white gold.

I've had my white gold ring for over two years now and have yet to require redipping. It all depends on the quality of the ring and how much acid your skin has, as to how fast it will yellow and require to be redipped.

My engagement ring uses palladium. As Barbara said, it's similar to platinum. I love it. In fact, FH & I decided to get our wedding bands in palladium, too.

I have a platinum engagement ring. I went with this choice and the slightly higher upfront cost so I would not have to get my ring redipped later on. The re-dipping process actually wears away some of the metal so that over time the ring gets thinner. I didn't want to take the chance that in 40 years it could break (depending on how many times I got it re-dipped)

Both my rings are platinum and I love them, but I have metal allergies so that was what made the decision!

Go with platinum for sure, although I have plenty of white gold rings and necklaces and they've never changed colors. Like a few others, I'd never heard of "dipping" before joining WW.

I have white gold & have had it since December 2012. I have had to get it rhodium plated 3 times already, but they said its because I use alot of hand sanitizer.

Platinum! Extremely durable. My ring was made in the 1920s and its held up beautifully.

Platinum weighs more than gold, I'm surprised you didn't know your ring was white gold.

I love my platinum ring and agree, if you can upgrade, do it.

My ring is platinum and I love it. Plus I think its shinier than white gold IMO. I also don't feel like I have to worry about it as much.
