Plated versus buffet

Jade, on November 24, 2019 at 9:33 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 22
We were planning on doing plated meals for our wedding, but yesterday I was at a wedding and now I’m second guessing this. It was the first wedding that I have been to that was not buffet style and I was surprised at how long it took. There was a salad course and then an entree, and it took over 2 and a half hours. There was only 3 servers for 20+ tables and it took so long for the food to be served. You could tell people were starting to get very bored and antsy and I don’t want that to happen at our wedding! Our plated meal would be a salad course, a pasta course, and then an entree, but if it’ll be over two hours we would rather do buffet style.

Do plated meals usually take that long?

I feel like it wouldn’t take too long time wise — I would stick to plated.. I’ve been to many wedding - both buffet style and plates — all wonderful and you have pros and cons to both BUT I prefer plated — germs.. temperature of food.. lines.. walking with food lol all of that adds to my anxiety 🤣but that’s just me !!!

Honestly ya only thing I can think of is that the venue wasn’t very good! I have been to plenty of weddings with a plated dinner and it never took more than the planned hour from start to finish

We are going for buffet “Breakfast for Dinner”... think chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits and a prime rib carving station or omelette station... we both love breakfast so much...plus I have never been to a plated formal dinner where the food was good so we opted for a buffet ...

I would just double-check with your venue/caterer regarding their staffing and their planned time-frame. Daughter's wedding was plated (at a very-inclusive venue, so they had complete control over the food and staff) and I'd be surprised if it took them more than 10 minutes to deliver meals to all 100 guests. However, daughter's venue and staff are extremely experienced and has a strong commitment to a high-level of service. I don't think the entire dinner took more than 45 minutes from the time the first salads were served until the staff was clearing plates from guests who had finished eating. Unless the service is really bad, I much prefer plated to a buffet (they can take forever too!).

We had a plated meal with multiple courses and our venue told us it would be about 30 minutes per course. So dinner took a little more than an hour and a half.

That wedding sounds like it was poorly staffed because that it is not normal. Most plated dinners should take about 1 - 1.5 hours from start to finish, and this is mainly to help pace your evening so you can do your table visits while people eat. There should be enough servers so that everyone gets served at nearly the same time. Ours was a plated dinner and we chose to pace it out over 1.5 hours.

Plated meals are the norm by me so that is what I am accustomed to. I have never had that experience before. As others have said, it sounds like there were not nearly enough servers. We had 10 tables and at least 10 servers running around. Our venue provided the food and staff though, so there was a lot of communication.

I've never remembered a plated meal taking that long and we've been to many. I prefer plated but I think it also comes to the vibe you're wanting! I've been so some that just seemed to fit with the couple.

I have specifically asked for (and am paying for) additional staff to make my platted meal not take as long. If you have a big group, even a buffet can take a long time if there aren't enough set up. How many people are you having?

I prefer plated. We did buffet (but if we had an extra $1,500 we would have done plated) but guests sat down to a plated salad & bread on the table, then went to the buffet after our first dance. If you want plated, I'd just make sure your catering staff has enough people there.

It really just sounds like that wedding didn’t have enough servers — 3 for 20 tables is no where near sufficient for reasonable service. As long as your event is staffed properly, this should by be an issue.

It shouldn't take that long. They were down a server moat likely. If you are worried, express your concerns with the venue and request an additional server or two to ensure flow is adequate.

Sounds like this plated meal was very poorly planned! My husband works in the restaurant industry so one of his first questions to the venue was how many servers would we have based on the number of tables, so I encourage you to talk to your venue as well! Dinner should not take that long to serve. Personally I prefer plated at a wedding because even a well laid out buffet can take longer to serve everyone than servers putting out a plated meal. And no one wanted to carry around a hot plate of food while they’re all dressed up.

I am surprised as I have always read plated dinners are faster, but then when you said they were short staffed and that makes sense.

If you are having a formal dinner, plated is the way to go. If it makes you feel any better, just double check with your venue that they will have the correct number of servers. Sometime that is even in the contract.
