Plated or buffet?

I’m having such a hard time choosing between the two. I was set on doing plated. But FH wants buffet. He says that I have had most say in the planning of the wedding and this is the one thing he’d like to choose for our wedding.. I’m having such a hard time choosing between the two. I was set on doing plated. But FH wants buffet. He says that I have had most say in the planning of the wedding and this is the one thing he’d like to choose for our wedding.. I’m having a Gatsby themed , black tie evening wedding and think that buffet may seem too laid back. And one of my bridesmaids who is a mutual friend of us both keeps insisting buffet is the way to go, which is not helping my case at all.. I’m thinking I should just go with my gut and just give into doing buffet & let FH have this one.. but I also don’t want to regret doing buffet.. what do you guys think?

These days I personally don't think that having a buffet means the event is less formal. I see a lot more buffets and a lot less plated dinners both attending weddings as a guest and as a vendor.

I would choose buffet, because I don’t think I’ve ever had a decent plated meal at a wedding and because I think it’s good to give guests choices. But that’s just me, lol.

hat about doing something like stations as opposed to a big line, which I think would be nice and classy.

Is it really black tie? Like everyone will be showing up in tuxes and long dresses?

If it's actually black tie then you must have a multi-course plated meal and top-shelf open bar among other things (search black tie in the forums for the full list). I generally think buffet is fine but if it's black tie you must raise the standard of service to go with the expectation of formality from your guests.

If FH really wants to do buffet, though, I would let him have this win. There are so many ways were you can make a buffet style meal super classy!

As a guest, I wouldn't think it's weird at all if it was black tie and a buffet dinner as long as everything went smoothly!

Yikes. This. No buffet with black tie. Change attire if you really want buffet.

You can have an exquisite formal reception, but to call it black tie, you're expecting your male guests to wear tuxes or black suits, women to wear evening gowns, and the expectation is even more over the top than any formal luxury wedding you've ever attended. Black tie mandates a multi-course plated meal, valet parking, top shelf liquor, passed appetizers, top notch live entertainment, etc.. I don't see anything wrong with a buffet (although I prefer plated for the formality of a wedding), I just know that black tie and buffets don't go together. Maybe consider changing your website to say formal attire.

I’m all for buffets and think letting FH have a thing is great. That said a buffet is inherently NOT black tie. You shouldn’t put “black tie” if youre not hosting a formal affair. You could request “Formal Attire” on your website and hope people go all out, but black tie refers to a level of service. In labeling it this way you’re creating that expectation.

Again, nothing wrong with having the buffet ! Go for it. You can definitely have a nice , formal wedding with a buffet. But, not black tie with buffet.

I personally love buffet. I have control over what I eat.

But black tie night, that's plated.

I would let him have this one if he is making a fuss about it. Most grooms could give two bleeps about planning, so if he actually has an opinion I would let him have this one. The only people that would complain about a buffet are snooty people, and who cares what they think! As long as the food is delicious, that's all that matters.

I doing buffet or rather displays and stations because plated seems very stuffy to me. I don't want people to think that they need to stay seated and can't mingle.

Hi Jocelyn!! I can definitely understand how tough it can be choosing between buffet or plated. There are pros and cons to both sometimes! Since posting, have you decided on which option you'll go with?
