Plated dinner RSVP meal selection

Sept2017AKBride, on March 22, 2016 at 5:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

We will be having a plated dinner. We have several choices (1 fish, 1 beef, 1 vegetarian and 1 poultry) with so many choices I am struggling with how to list the choices. Is it acceptable to have a separate card for guests to choose their meal?

I would have the actual dish listed so that people know the sauce or how it is cooked. Especially with the vegetarian dish.

I like the pictures of the animal you will be eating.

This is a picture of one of the sample RSVP cards I had ordered, and I really like the way they list the meal selections. They give the title of the dish, describing just enough to give guests an idea of what they're actually choosing. Every time I look at this sample card, I just want to RSVP to this imaginary wedding and get all 3 dishes!

My venue asked that we simply list "____ Vegetarian" instead of specifying the exact dish to discourage non-vegetarians from picking the vegetarian option.

@samantha that seems silly. why do they care? you'll let them know a head of time, and I' ma weirdo I usually pick the fish or vegetarian option at weddings or catered events.

The venue's catering package is for two menu selections, plus a vegetarian option and any other medical dietary restriction that our guests happen to have. They are incredibly accommodating when it comes to dietary restrictions. However, if an insane number of people chose the vegetarian option, they'll tack on an insane fee for having a third menu option. Obviously, if someone wasn't going to like the filet and crab cake or salmon and crab cake we are planning to offer, they could still just mark that they want a vegetarian meal whether they're vegetarian or not. But the venue's point in that suggestion was just that the vegetarian meal is a dietary accommodation.

@Future Mrs. D, it was from Wedding Paper Divas and is part of the Chalk Celebration suite. It's probably the invitation we'll go with when the time comes!

We put it at the bottom of the RSVP card. It said...

    Indicate number of each:

    _ Beef

    _ Chicken

    _ Vegetarian

    _ Kids Meal

We did online responses, through our wedding website. We included a card, with our invitation, which directed guests to the website. On the card we offered 3 entrees:

Seared Chicken Breast & Sea Scallops, Fingerling Potatoes

Grilled Filet of Beef & Crab Cake, Mashed Potatoes

Stilton Risotto, Roasted Pear and Carmelized Walnuts

There was also an e-mail address, for special dietary considerations and late responses. 248 of 250 guests responded 10 days before the due date.

List the choices on the RSVP card. This is common.

If you have a wedding website, you can put details as to how the dish will be cooked (sauces etc). My SIL did this and I loved it! Also, make sure you mention guests to write any food allergies on the RSVP (or, at least mention this reminder on the website).

Personally I like seeing what the options are specifically because as a vegetarian, since I only have the one option, if it's something I can't eat I then know I need to figure something else out. For example people seem to love making the vegetarian option a portobello mushroom which I can't eat. If I see that it's a mushroom dish I know I then won't be able to eat any of the options and should plan on bringing a granola bar to tide me over and that I'l end up having to leave early. This is actually why I prefer buffets because there is a much lower chance I'll have to leave the wedding an hour or less into the reception. I hate missing the dancing but when you're starving you've just gotta go find food.

We just said chicken or vegetarian. As a guest, I like to know how things are going to be cooked, but as a guest with a food allergy, I'll probably just eat beforehand anyway. As a bride ordering stationery, describing the menu options was not really my priority.

I like it when the actual meal is listed. im not a vegetarian, but sometimes the vegetarian meals end up being way more appetizing. Not all chicken, beef, and fish is created equal - im always left wondering... is it steak? is it a roast? white fish? salmon?

I myself was thinking of having a plated meal vs buffet. I think I'm going to go with buffet only because there's more of a selection vs just one kind of meat. I like the idea of listing the choices so they will know ahead of time.

Is this required by your venue? I've def seen this in past weddings I've been to, so obviously I asked my caterer how this will work. They told us that so many people change their minds or don't remember what they selected on the rsvp card and just want something else.

The wait staff will take the orders of each table before our entrance into the reception.

I am doing the same thing but I narrowed my food down to 2 choices. When my guests arrive there will be a table outside the door with colored cards. My servers are aware of the colors and will be giving them oven roasted chicken (navy blue) or porkloin ( coral) Every meal comes with garlic mashed and a fresher steamed vegetable. Each of my tables will also be numbered and the servers will know exactly where they go with this choice.
