Plasticware?

Thankfully Anonymous, on July 25, 2013 at 11:15 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

Buffet style indoor reception, evening wedding, 150 guests, ceremony is classy and reception is a bit more relaxed. All alcohol is being served in glassware, is it tacky to serve food off of plastic if it's heavy duty/pretty plastic? I could care less, but I don't want any of the older guests to be put off. The savings wouldn't be HUGE, but we all know it's nice to save anywhere possible.

Thoughts..?

It's probably not worth the savings.

This might be because the only wedding I heard of having plasticware did this:

They told my FI he was invited but then they only sent the invitation to his parents. They assumed he would know he was part of it. (He's 25). They didn't give him a plus one even though they knew he had been with me for more than a year. When he didn't want to go because of that they insisted he go (he doesn't like drama so he went).

    They had a long gap.

He told me the food was horrible.

The place was really nice and formal so it clashed.

Even taking all those things away I personally don't like plastic dishes at weddings. Is there any way you can rent them so you can save some money like that?

If it's not a huge savings, I would go with real dishes. That's always my preference. But you can buy nice plastic that looks pretty if you'd rather.

Weeeeeellllll......we were originally doing bamboo to go with our theme, but found it was cheaper to get china place settings through our caterer. It is a simple setting: cocktail plate, dinner plate, water/tea glass, coffee cup and silverware. Oh, and it includes the napkins in our colors.

However, on the suggestion of the caterer, we are getting very nice plastic plates and "silverware" for the cake. There are lovely plastics out there now and way cheaper then getting an extra supply of plates and forks. By the time the cake comes around, who cares. lol

We are also serving alcohol in plastic cups to cut down on the cost of glasses since guest put them down and walk away. I know some people frown on that and if we had a longer reception where the caterer had time to wash them then maybe we would do glass. But we don't. As long as everything is recyclable we are fine with it.

Lol cherry I did that to my cousin... He graduated college and He works like 2 miles from his parents so I figured he moved back there.

Then I found out he was living with his girlfriend the next state over and driving like an hour to an from work. I felt bad when I realized this (I didn't even realize he had a girlfriend,

Much less a pregnant one lol) so I messaged him on Facebook like a week later after him posting something that made me think and said I sent your parents an invite with your name and blah blah blah. He didn't come. I felt sooo bad.

But yes I hate the thought of plastic. If you're using glass for the cups you might as well use them across the board. I see plastic only fitting for bbqs and family holidays

My friend had an outdoor wedding and they used plastic ware. It might save you money, but honestly it made the wedding feel tacky. Don't do it.

Y'all are scaring me. O.k, just had a thought for both of us! Not a unique one...I thought of doing it before. Just depends on what we can find in our budget and if it fits your theme, but it does ours.

We are going to hit some antique places and pick up miss-matched desert plates. We have miss-matched antique S&P shakers on the tables so this will work for us. Might still go with the plastic silverware. Sorry, ladies. As for the cups...just can't do it to my caterer. Short venue time keeps that from happening.

For my sisters wedding we served food on clear plastic plates, drinks were clear plastic cups and them we used real silverware that was set at the table with cloth napkins. It worked out well. The silverware wasn't expensive at all and then I resold it. But to answer your question I think plastic would be just fine.

As long as its not the cheepy stuff from the dollar store...I don't judge...

And even when it is, I don't "really" judge (unless I truly felt you could have done better).

i have been to super classy upscale weddings and had worse food than at super down home weddings at the hall with plastic everything from the cheepy dollar store.

I used plastic silverware....and I used plastic plates too...lol because we did not want to do dishes....but that was just us. It all depends on your setting. Mine was mellow and we were all more concerned with drinking Smiley smile

I was once batting this idea around with the first venue I was going to choose. Then I changed and they supply everything.

Take a look at Smarty had a party. kind of need stuff.

We're using plastic...the thick clear kind. But we're having a very laid back wedding...so it'll work. Who cares if you use plastic? You eat with it once...then it gets tossed into a container and the guest never sees it again...with plastic you don't have to deal with reselling it or washing it.

The caterer provides the nice plastic with the food, no extra charge. They offer the option to rent china and silver but it's and additional 6.00 a head--which with 150 guests adds up to enough to make me consider my options.

How about @desirae's idea...silverware (to ease the plastic meat cutting phobia) and plastic plates? They do offer that option...

Ask them if they can set up a small table and see how it looks to you...For me it was fine everyone was more concerned about eating than what they were eating on and I had around 150 guests too.

One of the best weddings I went to was a mix of indoor/outdoor festivities, they used the bamboo plates for dinner and (cup)cakes - they did rent real silverware for dinner.

And for cups, they used the clear plastic kind - no one noticed or really cared - BUT they did have a self service bar with 3 kegs & 100 bottles of wine. So it was very informal.

I don't think it is a bad idea. I know Sams Club has really nice plastic plates with a vintage/classy design that looks like glass. Let me see if I can find a picture and I'll post it. We used those plates at my bridal shower and they looked nice!

They looked something like this. I think a style like these would like just fine with the glass drinkware.

You can use plastic at every BBQ you have for the rest of your life. If you have food that has to be cut, I think plastic is not good for that.
