Plastic wine glasses – wrong or ok?

Reena, on May 5, 2010 at 3:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

To save cost, we may decide to use disposable dinnerware. We found some nice ones, thanks to many of the suggestions from the brides out there. The only thing I'm stuck on is...what about the wine glasses? We're pretty particular about wine and we want to select good quality ones for our reception, so using plastic wine glasses is a little disappointing. Will it significantly distort the taste? Would it be strange to have everything disposable except the wine glasses?

I would just go with plastic wine glasses, unless all of your guests like to drink more than one glass and are wine snobs. Still then, I might be able find wine glasses for a $1 or so.

Work with your budget. If you can't afford it, I think friends and family should be understanding.

I'm not sure about distorting the taste. I have no idea.

We served good wines at our wedding and people still talk about what a great selection of beer and wine we had.

I doubt they will be talking about real or plastic wine glasses either way.

Maybe buy a couple and do a test run. I have never tried it. But, You should be able to rent wine glasses from a party store for about the same as buying plastic.

So... a girl my FH danced with ordered plastic wine glasses that had their names and date printed on them, so they were favors and the wine glasses... I don't know where she got them but she said they were like .80 each! but at that point you might as well rent them... I think a wine glass is only about .60 to rent... but don't quote me on that...

Its entirely up to you..but I know for sure that Dollar Tree stores sell wine glasses for $1.00 each and they are glass and super nice. I got one from there and I love it. but It's entirely up to you, whether or not you want to have a ton of wine glasses after the wedding.

Dollar tree sells them in bulk too online.

36 wine glasses for 36 dollars sounds awesome to me. xD

Thanks all, maybe I'll try and test it out. But you're right, I shouldn't worry about it so much and I'm pretty sure our guests would understand. If renting real wine glasses are actually cheaper than buying plastic ones, I might do that then. Does anyone think it might look weird if everything else is plastic though?

If you are using plastic, remember to get extras as people are much more likely to put down an empty plastic wine glass and misplace it, or throw it away than they are a glass wine glass.

If people misplace the glass ones, you can always have them washed if you get close to running out.

Thanks Brooklynne, I'll check those out. And Caroline, good point! I would never have thought of that. I am leaning more towards using rental glasses since they look better. I'm still just trying to decide if it will look funny set together with the disposable plates and cutlery.

I'm not sure about the wine, but they sell awesome plastic silverware that looks like the real deal. I think Walmart has it, my mom usually shops there and she is the one who had it.

I'm using plastic everyhting even down to the chargers...(acrylic)because I'm a budget bride and I dont want to have to sell anything afterwards unless it's absolutely necessary..It also cuts clean up time for my relatives helping to set up

I would suggest just using the plastic ones; but do buy extra in case it cracks you have extra. It is cheap to rent, but the downfall to renting wine glasses is that you will have to keep count of them and if they break you will have to pay for them.

On your wedding day that should be the least of your worries.. counting wine glasses. I wouldn't stress over that issue much.

The plasticware is super nice these days. I dont think it would be an issue. I wouldn't even realize it. The only thing that might be strange is if you have glass wine glasses but plastic glasses for water and liquor. If you don't have them at the same place, seated and bar, it may be okay. I would notice that change.

Some venues do not allow glass. That is the rule at my daughter’s venue, a city building.
