Plastic disposable plates?

Crystal, on October 30, 2020 at 5:44 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 26
Our venue allows outside catering and just in general any other vendors. That being said our caterer is not a plated service it’s buffet style.
How do y’all feel about plastic plates that are cute and disposable?
Our venue does not allow dishes to be washed there so I really don’t want to buy glass dishes and carry them out dirty.
Personally time growing up we never had fancy super crazy expensive parties. At my sweet 15 we had disposable paper plates lol. And even other family parties.
But I’ve been reading posts/blogs about how it’s rude to have disposable plates or whatever. Why is this? If the guest aren’t paying a dime for the wedding, they are there to celebrate the marriage of the couple and not to judge.
Anyone else thinking of having disposable plastic plates Rather than $5 per glass plate? I know it’s such a small thing but it’s crazy how much $ goes into the small stuff.

Eh..I wouldn't care as a guest or even notice. Every wedding I've attended had heavy duty disposable plates. I recently attended a super fancy 50th anniversary party that was on par with any wedding and they just picked up a couple sleeves of Chinet plates from Costco and no one was fazed in the least because they were raving about how good the local Chinese/Hawaiian restaurant was who catered.

Btw there is nothing rude about disposable plates. People have personal preferences obviously but you are not breaching any etiquette by providing them. What would be rude is to not provide any plates period. If someone is that picky, they are free to go home.

Agreed! Glad I’m not the only one who thinks the same.

My caterer suggested paper ones cause of the heat of the food but I want something with atleast some decor so I want to order some plastic ones online. I have nothing against paper ones though.
I know my family won’t care at all either, Thankfully!

Make sure the plates are sturdy rather than pretty. Most pretty disposable plates are very thin and will not support the weight of a full dinner or anything heavier than a couple cookies at most. And get some inexpensive colorful chargers at efavormart.com with colorful napkins.

It's not rude at all! Plastic plates are fine if you're going for a more casual vibe and your wedding isn't particularly fancy. I've been to a couple of outdoor weddings with plastic plates and never batted an eye.

Thank you for that, currently looking for chargers!
That’s my fear, getting plates and they turn out to be so thin

Also..efavormart.com I noticed has a variety of fancy plaric/acrylic plates. Not sure how sturdy they are but they're cheap enough that you can order a set to test them out before you decide. They don't look "cheap"/informal at all.

I’ve never heard of it being rude. Go for it girl! As a guest, as long as I’m being fed some awesome food- disposable, sturdy plates are fine with me! Having them pretty is just a bonus!

Again, you can't go wrong with heavy duty Chinets from Costco as those are tried and true.

If you are having a casual wedding, plastic would probably be fine. However, I would just rent actual dishes. Many rental places collect the plates as is and wash them so you don’t have to.

I’m also planning on having plastic disposable plates for my buffet! I wouldn’t call my wedding-to-be casual, but as I’m researching, the convenience and expense of using plastic is better than renting all the cutlery and tableware supplies in my area when taking into account the delivery fees. I agree w/ everyone—finding sturdy ones are key, and it also helps if they’re cute! I plan on ordering mine from Posh Party Supplies (https://www.poshpartysupplies.com/ ) which seem to have a lot of good reviews and an assortment of elegant options. I do want to make sure they’re recyclable as well.

What about bamboo plates? They look nice, are sturdier than a lot of plastic plates and they’re way better for the environment as they biodegrade.

That's a great idea too! Make sure there is a trash bin clearly labeled for them so they can be disposed properly

In my area renting dishes is quite expensive, I’m in the Dallas/FT Worth area and I think it’s too much just to rent them

I see someone already suggested eco-friendly plates! Foam and plastic are horrible for the environment. We buy biodegradable silverware, plates, cups, and straws for our parties!

I wouldn’t think it’s rude! They actually have a lot of disposable dinner sets on Amazon that look way better than what you typically think of for disposable plates. They also have a ton of color options and patterns if you wanted to make them match your theme! Plastic disposable plates? 2
