Plastic dinnerware? Tacky?

Is anyone using plastic dinnerware instead of fine china? To keep cost down?

It really depends on the setting. Would I use it in an elegant indoor setting? No. Outside? Absolutely. Bamboo is pretty, and the silvery looking tableware is great too, but it's not necessarily less expensive than renting china. Staffing is usually a little less to serve on disposables though.

No disposable napkins or TC though. Looks terrible.

Some of the types they make these days look absolutely fabulous. And you can't tell much of a difference by looking at it, from regular china or glass plates. But it's a heck of a lot cheaper and won't break. I agree with P.P. about flatware. So many plastic knives are worthless, as far as cutting goes, and I've had the points of plastic forks break on my all too often.

We are doing plastic that looks like real silverware. Around here that's "elegant" (eyeroll)! People here would be happy using the very breakable plastic-ware from the dollar tree! Also it's important to note that our reception will be casual and not formal. I wouldn't dare using plastic (even if it looks real) in a formal setting.

ETA: We are also using "china-like" plates and a higher quality paper napkins.

We're using plasticware for our plates and heavy-duty similar to what @Amber suggested. We are having a casual outdoor BBQ-style reception. We will be providing our guests with mason jars that will double as their wedding favor but we are only have about 35 guests max.

In all honesty, I am more concerned with a couple having the wedding they can afford. If that means sandwiches and salad on a plastic plate, so be it. That's not going to change anything for me. It saddens me when I see a couple spend all this money on a wedding and when they return from their honeymoon, move into an apartment because they don't have the money for a house.

Are you using fake plates etc? If your using real plates, plastic silverware doesnt make sense to me. If your using fake dinnerware, then Id go for the silver plastic eating utensils. I cant believe its 6 bucks per person...how much for just the silverware?:-
