Plastic dinnerware? Tacky?

Adoretamm, on May 20, 2015 at 11:39 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

Is anyone using plastic dinnerware instead of fine china? To keep cost down?

Both FCIL did it, they didn't seem to have any complaints (I know I didn't) This wedding looks fine with it (this is my new caterer on their website)

Not tacky but definitely not environmentally friendly. We use so much plastic and it all ends up in landfills or worse the ocean.

If you want to use disposable check out some of the very cool biodegradable, recycled plates etc. Like this,

It's a little more pricey but my friend used it and it looks pretty cool, Plus it's actually a little more durable/sturdy than plastic.

Honestly, avoid plastic if you can. I wish I had a picture to show you how much plastic washes up on our beaches everyday.

We're renting real stuff for dinner but we've got bamboo utensils for happy hour and cake. As a guest as long as the forks and knives are strong enough not to break as I'm cutting food, I wouldn't care it they were real or plastic.

I think the appropriateness would depend on your venue and also the quality of the plastic dinnerware. I know they make really nice looking plates and forks and knives that look "real" that you can get for cheap. But I think it would still be out of place in a country club or ballroom or anything like that. If you are doing an outdoor or barn wedding, though then I think it would be appropriate.

I don't see a problem with it, I'm doing recyclable plates. No ones gonna say "oh my god can you believe she had plastic plates?" And if they do their an ass.

    There's bamboo plates

(not too much cheaper than real plates when rented)

I think the bamboo is fractionally more expensive than the palm leaf. I think my friend ended up paying just over a hundred for all her tableware plus shipping to the Cayman Islands. I know I'm paying 6.50 a head for rental of real china - so yeah, definitely still cheaper.

But definitely try and avoid the plastic. Even if it's recyclable because I have serious doubts about how much 'recyclable' plastic actually gets recycled.

Love all your ideas! Our venue has China for $6pp. So I'm just seeing if I could find cheaper alternatives. Didn't know if plastic was considered tacky

I must be getting a superdeal with my caterer because I'm getting mine for $2.... but then again I am in a smaller town with a lower income average, sooooo (Well, not my town but the one my caterers in, and the one we're moving to after the wedding)

We used plastic plates and cups, but got very inexpensive stainless steel flatware. I wanted to make sure that the flatware didn't break during use.

What type of venue @adoretamm? We are using real silverware because it comes included in the price of the venue. I agree with Ren, if your in a super formal venue, it might stand out as cheap-looking but if it's more laid back it should be fine.

LOL! We are using paper plates, plastic cups, and plastic silverware. We are having BBQ dinner that FH's dad is catering.

Our dinnerware comes with the venue. Like the PP's said it depends on your venue. There are some type of plastic plates that actually look like china until you inspect them more closely. Maybe you could look at those for a option.

I probably would do plastic or something other than the venues $6pp price. That is just ridiculous!

@Lara our venue looks like a little house with a big banquet hall inside. To me it's a little more laid back. @Marsell that was the type of plastic that I was looking into actually, it looks nicer but it'll keep the cost down. Just don't know if I want to pay $6pp for China
