Plastic cups?

FMP, on March 19, 2017 at 5:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 26

Do you think it's tacky to use clear plastic cups for sodas and mixed drinks?

We are using glass for martinis (signature drink), champagne, wine, water, and drinks on the rocks. And we are serving beer in the bottle. But the caterer told us we would need about 450 cups for mixed drinks/soda and that throws our rental budget over by $300, so FH said to just get nice plastic cups for those... is that tacky?

Thanks!

I think it's weird to have some glass and some plastic. I'd do all of one or the other.

You need more plastic cups than you would glass bc people throw them away and nobody is washing them. It's not so much tacky as it is non-environmentally friendly.

I kind of think it's weird to have some glass and some plastic. But I don't think it's necessarily something that you can't do.

@FutureMrsPereda I am having plastic cups as well. I am having them personalized for a keepsake. Here is the link http://myweddingreceptionideas.com/personalized_plastic_cups.asp

We had plastic cups from www.smartyhadaparty.com. Our venue was in the middle of nowhere, so renting wasn't really easy.

Our wedding is semi-formal and our venue is a ballroom that overlooks the ocean. We're doing a rustic/chic style. I thought of doing personalized plastic cups to make it a little more fancy, but that would cost just as much $ as the glass.

We are doing thick plastic from one of the party stores. I think it's normal here for an outdoor wedding.

But I agree, they should all be plastic or all be glass. If you going to have people going around picking up and washing glasses, it defeats the purpose of plastic

I think it's kinda weird, in addition to being eco-unfriendly. I'd cut the types of glasses down to martini glasses, champagne flutes and then an all purpose tumbler. Your staff will probably have to wash glasses in any case but by the time you buy disposables,. its probably not that big a difference....

I am having the signature cocktail in two places -one being when people leave the ceremony to the second patio where the dinner will be. It is sangria and will be on a tray when they are leaving-those will be in 9oz plastic with fruit picks. Wine will be in glass glass and beer will be bottled

When I talked to the caterer, she didn't make it seem like they would be washing them as they went.

These are the personalized plastic ones I was looking into buying for the mixed drinks.

The question is, "how many people really remember the cups?" People remember the fun they had. Yeah, some people will say, "oh they had plastic and glass" but probably not everybody. If your wedding is formal, then upgrading wouldn't be a bad idea, However, if you think that $300 would be better suited some place else, use it there. If you can justify the extra $300 do it. I could see myself worrying about this as well, but at the end of the day, I'd tell myself that my guests aren't paying for the wedding or my life afterwards.

Tbh with you guys... I haven't been to many weddings in my life and I don't really know how the rentals and everything works. I signed a contract with the rental company last week and I've asked them to change it already once to double the salad/desert plates because I realized we need those for the starter salad AND cake. I feel like a damn fool asking them to change it again. I am the most annoying client ever, I'm sure... but that's because I don't know anything

Smiley sad and I usually don't realize until it's too late.

I don't think plastic fits with your venue either

Relax. I promise you asking to change the plates doesn't make you the most annoying client ever. They've probably dealt with so much worse than someone being unsure of how many of each item to have. They deal with your uncertainty every day. They don't mind.

They're charging you for glassware?? I don't know where you're getting married but usually plastic = tacky in my book.

@Chelsea, yeah we don't have an all-inclusive venue and the caterer does not provide any of the plates, flatware, glassware.

You're far from being annoying; you need to understand what's going on, and they should have asked you if you had a salad and then dessert.
