Plastic Cups

Karen, on March 22, 2018 at 11:35 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 29

I just found out my reception hall does not use real glasses. They provide plastic cups. I'm really upset about this. It was a question I never thought to ask, before booking.

I can not change venues, at this point. I can't afford to provide my own glasses & even if I did, who would wash them at the end off the night. I am considering renting glasses, but it's an extra expense I was not anticipating. I'm so embarrassed at the thought of plastic glasses, at a beautiful venue.

What is your feeling about being served a drink in a plastic glass, at a wedding?

Honestly, I've never batted an eye at drinking out of a plastic cup at a wedding.

I forgot to ask my venue this too and if they use plastic we will be renting glass cups. I just feel like it makes a big difference, but that is only IMO.

If it is a clear plastic cup, I personally don't mind. If anything, I might like it better since it's lighter. You can also rent glasses from other company if they allow you.

I’m sorry 😢 how many guests do you have? Sometimes you can find people selling glasses they used at their weddings for a good price, or they always sell them at the dollar tree for $1. You might be able to avoid delivery/set-up fees from a rental company this way.

Does your reception hall offer it for an added cost? It may be an upgrade option that you could ask them about.

I don't mind plastic cups at weddings as long as they are clear and not like red solo cups. We are having high quality plastic (acrylic) for most of our food and drink needs for our wedding. Our caterer says that it is becoming more popular because it usually decreases cost. If you are not comfortable with it, you can find a local rental company to rent them from, but someone would have to pick them up and drop them back off after the wedding. Another option is to buy glasses from the dollar store and just resell or donate afterwards.

I'm having 100 guests & most of them are big drinkers. I think I might need 500 glasses. If I buy them, then I need to wash them before use & bring them to the reception. What do I do with them at the end of the night? Throw them away? I do not want to have to deal with 500 wet sticky glasses. FH doesn't care about plastic or glass, but he'll care if I he has to load up 500 glasses on his wedding night.

The venue does not have any bar glasses, only plastic.

It would not bother me at all. I looked into renting them and i couldn't justify paying for them so we went with plastic.

No one will remember if the cups were plastic or glass after the wedding. I wouldn’t worry about it. If you’re really that worried and are willing to pay the extra expense, then rent them. But I wouldn’t worry about it I know it sounds easier said than done, but that’s what we did about plates, cups, and utensils. I was panicking but FH and basically everyone told me that no one will remember in the end.

What kind of venue is it? That's pretty odd.

It's a banquet hall, they've actually got "ballroom" in their name. The pictures of past events are all very elegant looking. Of course, when I saw it, it was very plain. Chairs stacked up, bare tables...because there were no events taking place at 1PM on Tuesday -lol.

But the bar is real, not a mobile one on wheels. It's recessed into the wall and is quite beautiful. There is a large patio, that you can use. I'm thinking that's why no real glass. They don't want breakage on the patio.

As a guest it wouldn't bother me I don't think.

As a host I hated the idea, we literally didn't use a caterer because of this.

Part of the issue for me was waste, 500 plastic cups is a LOT, are they compostable? Are they recyclable and actually going to be recycled?

Did the pictures you saw of the space have proper glasses? Could you ask where those couples got them?

I personally wouldn’t mind as long as they weren’t the super cheap plastic cups that crack easily

As a guest, this wouldn’t bother me as long as they’re good quality plastic. As a host, I would have rented glassware.
