Planning dilemma

Renee, on November 11, 2019 at 12:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 10
My fiancee and I have been engaged for a year. We didnt have a set date planned until last week. I go to tell my father and stepmom today and come to find out, my stepbrother (who got engaged this year) planned their wedding for the date we wanted. I dont know how to feel. My fiancee and I were in love with this date.

Could you push it to the same date a year from the one you picked? Or is the month, day, and year really what you fell in love with?

We already feel like we're waiting a while as it is. We've been together for 5 years, engaged for 1. We know we wouldnt be ready next year so we said the year after would be great. October is our favorite month and if we do it later in the month it would be too close to his birthday.

Have either you or your stepbrother booked a venue yet? Until the venue is booked, you really don't have a date. It's your wedding, so of course you can have it whenever you want, but I would be prepared for some family to miss the wedding if you continue with a date you know they've already chosen. Family will probably side with him if he "chose it first".

If it were me, I would probably change the date if at all possible. We originally booked our wedding for May 2020, but just changed our date to February 2020 a few weeks ago so my brother-in-law (who is also a groomsman) wouldn't miss our wedding (he's being deployed).

You're allowed to feel disappointed, but I think the obvious decision here is to choose a different date.

I get that for sure! Our engagement will be two years and some months long when we finally get married! Does FH not want it close to his birthday for a particular reason?

I also agree with Amber, if you guys book a venue before them, it is technically your date, not theirs!

Feeling disappointed is normal but then I would suggest choosing another date. Sorry that happened.

Who had the date first? Whoever choose the date first should get it. I know I had two set dates that I loved, neither one worked out. Since my brother is in the military and I really want him at my wedding. I found out he is going to be deployed overseas with both of the dates I choose. So my wedding now is later then expected. It is fine though. Because having my brother there is really important to me and the date my fiancé and I choose actually lands on my aunts birthday who passed away. So the date I ended up choosing is really special for me.

I have a brother and 2 stepbrothers. The last thing I’d want to do is create a race to book a venue and a competition for a date. I would talk to your stepbrother about it but probably choose a different date. My wedding got pushed back six months then a year after I originally wanted because the timing just didn’t work. We’re still getting married in 13 days now and still thrilled and in love.

I originally wanted to get married on our original anniversary date in September. But we fell in love with this one venue which didn’t have the dates we wanted. So we settled for what they had and it worked out in the end. I always thought I was gonna get married in September, but really I just want to marry my man. A date is only special because you two make it special.

Yeah I mean I'm annoyed for sure and it sucks, but theres nothing I can do. I don't have a good relationship with my step family so talking to them is out of the question.
