Pinecones on our cake

Leslyn, on October 17, 2018 at 3:42 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 27

I am just looking for a little help... Has anyone else had pinecones as decoration on their cake? We finally ordered our wedding cake last weekend, and part of the design is pinecones. Our baker asked if we would provide them, or if we wanted them to... right away I responded "We can provide them!", thinking it would be no big deal. WELL... Right after we left I got to thinking... Do you use REAL pinecones on wedding cakes, or do you use "fake" pinecones? From looking into it there aren't really any "fake" pinecones, but they can be made from gum paste. I had it in my head to use real, but then with a quick search, I found a small forum board of people saying that, thats an awful idea and its disgusting to use REAL pinecones. So...... I'm not sure what to do now. Is it weird to use real pinecones? Do I ask her to supply them? Do I try to make them myself? Has anyone used pinecones as part of their design... can you help me?

Hi Leslyn! I have seen pine cones used on wedding cakes many times! They are almost always real pinecones, and I have never heard anyone complain about them being disgusting, as you do not eat them. I have never heard of them not being provided before, but I'm sure you could order some off of the internet? I think it's a really great idea and if you like it, you should go for it no matter if you choose to use real or fake pinecones! Here are a few of my favorite cakes with pinecone decor:

I would definitely use fake ones for sanitary reasons.

Thank you! That makes me feel better. The 2nd picture is actually the one our cake is being styled after! I love it so much, its absolutely gorgeous! I didn't think it was a big deal either, and then like I said I saw a forum board where people said it would be disgusting and would leave a weird flavor on the cake. Which I figure as long as I get nonscented pinecones, and I could even clean them myself before giving them to our baker I don't think they would be an issue. But I just wasn't sure.

I'm sure real pinecones are used, just not ones you pick off the ground - LOL! I'd ask the baker how much it would cost for him/her to supply the pinecones. You can buy them in a craft store for about $6 but I can't imagine the baker would charge more than $10 and it may be worth it to save you the hassle.

But by fake ones do you mean ones from a craft store, or ones made of gum paste? Because I cant find any actual fake pinecones. They are all real, its just that the ones they sell in craft stores for example have been soaked and cleaned and sanitized to be used for crafts etc. While the gum paste ones I would have to make myself.

I am so glad! And I LOVE that cake design! And I agree, as long as you buy non-scented pine cones, you should be in the clear! People won't even be thinking about the pine cones when they see how beautiful your cake is! I can't wait to see how it turns out! Smiley heart

Oh gosh, definitely not gonna be picking any off the ground! LOL Smiley tongue

The only reason why I jumped the gun and offered to provide them is because we are also going to be using them as decor for the reception so I'm sure we'll have plenty of extras that we wont need, so I figured why not use them on the cake.

If you choose to use real pine cones there are ways to clean them. In the past when I've used pine cones for decor I've baked them.

Mix 1 part white vinegar, 1 part water in a bowl and soak them for 20ish minutes.

Rinse them and let them dry off for a bit.

Heat the oven to 200 degrees and bake them for around 30 minutes.

After you take them out let them sit for a few days - they usually start to open up more when they fully dry.

This process kills any bugs and removes sap.

Also, I suggest trying this well in advance of the wedding just in case they don't turn out exactly like you wanted them you have time to readjust the baking time or choose something else.

We have pine cone shaped candles at our house, and I think I've seen other kinds of fake ones too. You may have to go to a craft store? If you use real ones, I'd just bake them in the oven first, to kill any bugs, etc. that may be inside them. Maybe put them near the bottom of the cake? So a pointy part doesn't get stuck in the cake and fed to someone?

I was curious about fake pinecones because of this thread, so I googled it this is what I found:

Amazon: 30 for $99.95 (Personally I think that is too expensive)
    https://www.amazon.com/ALAN-TETREAULT-SELECT-PRODUCTS-Pinecone/dp/B06Y4BXRJ9?keywords=pinecone+cake+topper&qid=1539806522&s=Clothing&sr=1-9-catcorr&ref=sr_1_9

Everything else were real "craft" pinecones. -- Just be cautious of buying craft pinecones online because a lot of the time they are scented.

    Good Luck!

Go to a craft store and get the decorative pinecones. They are real but treated so there aren’t bugs or dirt in them. Don’t use ones you find off the ground.

Real I think would be fine. You can buy real at a store. Your Baker will probably be using a food safe barrier anyway. I know I’m using fake flowers in mine and that is what she is doing.
