Picky about music played by dj

Yesterdaysbride, on May 16, 2019 at 8:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 14
Okay so we have an eclectic taste in music and I’m starting to lose hope on finding a Dj that can please us. Im really not sure if it is proper to ask for exact music to be played by your DJ or if it is considered rude.
However we like kpop, metal, reggeaton, salsa and merengue and we have yet to find someone that can play all of those genres in one night.
I have considered the idea of plugging in my phone and playing pandora for our personal playlist but a lot comes to mind that makes me hesitant. I’m worried that we won’t get reception in the venue or what if my phone dies or doesn’t even connect to their music system at all.
Is it so terrible that I don’t want to settle for a dj that plays outdated music or mostly what’s on the radio? Am I expecting too much?

Not at all! i'm pretty picky with that too! I have a DO NOT play list of artists and songs I don't want played. If the DJ wants the gig they'll go along with your wishes

They do seem to want to sort of quarter back the play..like I'm the DJ I got this. But I know exactly what l want played and what l don't. Since I'm the one paying I'm the one that's going to create the play list. Music is way too important for me to leave it up to a stranger. They don't know my favorite songs or when l want what. Lol. I say create a play list and call around and go from there

Maybe create a playlist of the songs you're wanting to help them? If they want the job bad enough they will just download the songs/music you want and play it. I gave my DJ a list of ceremony songs, but I'm leaving everything else up to him. I love several genres of music so I'm not too picky on what he plays. He's done several weddings and I trust him to play music my guests will enjoy.

For the amount of money you spend on a wedding, I don't think you're expecting too much to want specific genres/songs played. If you still want to go the DJ route, be upfront when you interview DJs that you have very specific desires and explain that you'd be most comfortable being able to build out the playlist with them.

That said, part of being a good professional DJ is about reading the room to get a sense of what will get the crowd on the dance floor, so I would hear them out and let them have some input/flexibility if you're going to spend the money on one. If you're not comfortable with that, then I would go the playlist route.

    Good luck!

We sent our DJ a spreadsheet with a list of music he could choose from. Had about 8 hours worth of music broken down into some for cocktail/dinner then the rest of the reception. He took som liberty and played some stuff that was similar to what we had and checked with us before he did that.

    We had a similar issue.

We found a DJ that would log into a spotify account.

The DJ we picked has an online catalog where we can request what he plays. If they dont have it, we send him a YouTube link.

My fiance also came to a realization that some of his tastes weren't things other people would like, nor could they dance to it.

My FH and I both aren't into much "radio" popular music either, so we are going to have our DJ play some of our favorites, but we also had to realize that people will enjoy popular songs much more, so we are letting our DJ play some of those songs to get our guests up and dancing as well. We want our guests to enjoy the reception!

I find it odd that DJs are not letting you do what you want? My DJ gives us a whole list of suggestions then wants a list of to be played songs and do not play songs/artists. They should be able to get anything. But maybe the ones you are speaking to don't have access to everything possibly? I would also keep in mind that it's not all about your tastes... It's for your guests. So be wary of playing too much of songs/genres that nobody is into.

My husband and I are picky about music and honestly I REGRET having a DJ. We wrote a list of songs we really wanted played and gave an idea of the type of music our guests would enjoy, because no DJ lets you have TOTAL control or else there wouldn't be much of a point to their job. He skipped a lot of songs that we always imagined having played at our wedding and even played some newer music that we recommended he didn't. And guess what... everyone left the dance floor when those newer songs were played. If I could go back, I would have made a playlist, rented good speakers and paid a family member or friend to MC for the necessary announcements.

No, I don't think you're expecting too much. You just haven't found the right DJ. What area of the country are you in? It might be helpful to reach out on Facebook, for recommendations. Our DJ said he could play pretty much anything we want. He already has an extensive music collection, but even if we want something he doesn't already have, he said he could get it. So, I'm not sure why your DJ isn't telling you that. I would shop around for another DJ. If you're in California, message me and I'll give you our guy's name.

You aren't being too picky. The company I am using actually has a whole portal where I can be as specific or general as I want. Artists songs or genres I want and don't want, how many of each genre, the time of each song.... With digital music these days, I can't see any reason why anyone wouldn't be able to give you exactly what you want.

    Hi Sashenka!

Welcome to the WeddingWire community Smiley smile

Great advice from all the previous posters!

When you meet a DJ you like, perhaps speak with them about your concerns. Hopefully, you can find someone that will work with you to create a setlist with music you and your FS, along with tunes to keep guests dancing!

Have you had any luck finding someone you and your FS like yet?
