Picked Venue, But Can't Decide on Feel/theme Etc

Doing a vow renewal. Eloped for our wedding and 5 years later will be getting both

VenuePicked Venue, But Can't Decide on Feel/theme Etc 1

families together to celebrate our marriage. We toured a lot of venues and called even more, checked websites, etc. before deciding on Meadowbrook Country Club in Racine, WI. It has great reviews and Michael, the director of events, has been awesome to work with so far. Bonus – it’s in our budget. But it doesn’t have quite the feel, etc I was looking for.

I was originally thinking rustic elegant or industrial chic, and visiting venues that fit in that category. This one kind of falls in the middle. The problem my pinterest vision was white / ivory linens, greenery, either wooden folding chairs (like you see outside for garden ceremonies, but in a wood tone or white color) or chiavari chairs. Basically white, wood, greenery, and lots of lighting (candles, etc).

While their rules are more relaxed when it comes to putting up decor, they have said no to hanging fabric from the wooden beams on the ceremony side, in front of the fireplace. I can drape the windows, but not the beams. I really think fabric would add the softness it needs and am somewhat disappointed.

Other disappointment is the chairs. I cannot rent or use chiavari chairs because they are too expensive for my limited budget, and the wooden folding ones don’t have non-scratch pads on the bottom (the one other thing they are very picky about is protecting their ballroom floor). So it appears I am stuck using the black chairs everyone else has used on the ceremony side. So, mixing wood and black metal, just as with the beams and black lighting fixtures. I absolutely hate the chairs they have on the reception side of the room – they clash totally with the carpet (different patterns, ugly florals) but am not a fan of chair covers either. The only example of chair covers I like is the one pictured below, which was at Meadowbrook. Not sure where they were procured from though. My other option is to use the black chairs on the reception side of the room as well, which I am not entirely opposed to. (There are enough chairs to be set up for both sides at once).

I am having a hard time deciding what the feel, theme ie should be. I know what my original vision was but not sure how to work around it. We will likely be serving a buffet style dinner with our dessert cake. It looks like I will have to mix black and wood together. I know I want to use a lot of greenery (especially ferns). Planning to use the black kerosene lanterns they provide on the tables as centerpieces along with greenery, etc. Candles of graduated heights, monogram, and ferns on the fireplace. I like candlelight, especially crackled glass. So, ferns, lanterns, and I also want to use rhinestones as accessory bits here and there … But is that too much of a glam feel? I’m not really a glam person but our rings are white gold with diamonds on mine. Planning to wear a fern rhinestone haircomb and rhinestones on my shoes.

What would my theme be? Romantic? Vintage? Elegant? Rustic? Glam?

Still coming up with a color scheme. They offer lots of colors for napkins, and tablecloths either in white black or sandalwood (like darker champagne?) I am not sure I want to use white as it is a August event and it is a vow renewal, not a wedding. (We eloped five years ago, and the vows got messed up by the officiant. While still married nonetheless we decided we’d like to celebrate our marriage with both families, and say our vows the way we originally had wanted). I wish ivory was an option, but it is not. So it seems I am stuck with white or sandalwood (champagne variations?) Right now I am thinking purple, champagne, and open to a couple other colors.

Also, it doesn’t seem to have much variety for pictures. We can go out on the golf course with our photographer and hopefully find a few nice shots. But I reallly love pictures and not sure what it has in the way for a first look, etc.

For anyone willing to watch it, there is a link to a 3d video tour.

Sorry for the long post. Any advice much appreciated!

I found selecting my dress really helped solidify my theme. It was very vintage looking so I started getting ideas based off that. Have you tried on dresses yet? Sometimes the style you like can help you decide on theme.

    I love your ceremony room!

I don’t think the black chairs look bad in the ceremony room, I’d use them in your reception too. The wall lanterns—are they black metal? If so, I’d buy ones as close to those as your reception centerpieces and ceremony aisle decor to tie in. I would use the fern leaves you want under the centerpiece lanterns, black tablecloths to match the chairs. I think this would be a rustic glam, or modern rustic look? Not sure about colored napkins... maybe ivory or white?

Uplights may help in the reception room (maybe set on a golden or ivory color). I might put them against the brick walls on the sides (not against the white walls as in the pics). You can rent cordless ones from RentMyWedding for only $25 each (free shipping). Totally easy to set up.

Do those wall lanterns work? Their glow would be really pretty!

Good tip, thank you. I've narrowed it down to two dresses I'm deciding on:

Or this one: (several alterations would be made, especially length - don't want/need a train):

That's a neat thought! And yes, the wall lanterns do work.

Thanks. Yeah, I still feel like I'm sorting everything out for myself .... making do with what it is. It's great, don't get me wrong - there are obviously reasons we picked it - just the "perfect" place doesn't exist I guess.... or if it does, on a much bigger budget Smiley smile

Dang I typed up a whole long comment and lost it...

I'm very interested in this because I was in a similar situation. I couldn't figure out the feeling or vibe I was going for. So many brides on ww talk about theme, but I want a feeling lol. Warm, casual, fun, romantic in a wooded setting, kind of fairytale-ish. I don't want anything cheesy, I want elegance and I'm stressing about how to make that vision a reality with my budget.

Your venue looks perfect! Very quaint and cozy and romantic. I haven't noticed any other brides using black and ivory. I'm using a good bit of black and ivory, as well as copper. I like the idea of sandalwood. Definitely use a lot of ivory to break up the dark colors. I think you're off to a good start. I'd love to see more of your inspo! Share some more pics of you get a chance.

Tee hee. I knoooooow. There were things I would have loved to rent to make "Pinterest perfect" but we had to just prioritize decor with the biggest impact. I think if you incorporate some dark colors (i.e. like black), those chairs will fade into the background. They really look fine in the ceremony room. In the reception room I just wouldn't pair with white/ivory linens or they will totally stand out, which I don't think you want.

    Beautiful venue!

As for the ceremony chairs, no one will really see them except for the ones on the aisles and the backs of the last row when people are being seated. If you don't like the ceremony chairs, consider adding some flowers to the end chairs on every other row like these aisle markers: https://www.somethingborrowedblooms.com/en/products/category/aisle-markers-10/ and you could even drape a garland across the back row to draw the eye away from the chairs themselves. However, since the room really draws your eye upwards to the beautiful ceiling, don't let the chair decoration be too busy. You still want guests to be looking up.
