Photography for minuscule budget

Laura, on August 24, 2019 at 11:31 AM Posted in Planning 0 8
So to begin with, let me give you an idea of budget. We were originally just going to do a courthouse wedding because we are not wealthy by any means, and I am not very high maintenance when it comes to things like this. I couldn't care less if it was in a courthouse or the Cistine Chapel, but my mom made a push for an actual ceremony. We found a venue that's only 200 and a selection of dresses that are about 300, both things my mother is paying for. A friend is officiating for us, the reception is a small and informal potluck with family and friends(plus a beautiful cake made by a local bakery) hosted at a friend's house, I'm making all the decor and floral arrangements myself, and the current plan is hopefully to hire another friend's dad to do the photography. However, I'm also trying to find a backup plan for if he's busy or too expensive. Only problem is that I've noticed most photographers cost more than my whole wedding thus far. What are some of the best places to look for photographers that stay below the four figure range? Or is there an alternative idea I can pursue? I just know there is no universe where I can scrape together even $1000 for photography, and I know the average is much more than that. But I also want at least pictures of the event, even if they're not mindblowingly good. It's just the one part of the wedding ceremony I can't do myself.

I would search for elopement photographers and see what you can find, or look for photography students looking to build their portfolio. You could also see if any of the photographers you’ve looked at offer hourly packages instead of full wedding packages.

On occasion I've seen new photographers in facebok groups offering discounted (sometimes free) wedding packages to build their portfolio.

I agree with Chandra. There were times I saw photographers give out free or heavily discounted packages so they could build their portfolio. Some may be new or some may just be new to the wedding industry. Also another suggestion is if you have any friend with a nice camera and is a good photographer in general that could work. My maid of honor did our engagement shoot and it came out great.

There's a website called Thumbtack. You can search your area for up-and-coming photographers. The rates for these semi-pros are usually a lot less than the more experienced photographers.

Good photos are mind blowing though! Can you find a good one, explain your wedding, and ask about a 60-90 minute session? You can skip getting ready pics (not really photo album required) but get the ceremony & photos after? You’ll probably love having pics of you both, and great photos of family too.

That's why I'm asking my friend's dad first. He did my prom pictures and they were amazing, so I'm hoping I can work something out. However, he and his wife run a foster home for at risk babies, so I don't know if he'll even be available since many of the babies they take in are sickly and have sudden emergencies at times. Hence why I'm looking for a backup plan. I'm trying to stay within a couple hundred max considering plan A was a courthouse wedding lol.

Thanks for the suggestions on how to finder newer photographers! Most of the prices I saw on photographers listed here were more than I planned on spending for my entire event so I was panicking a bit lol!

Have you thought of hiring someone starting out or a photography student looking to build their portfolio?
