So I found a photographer I love, however, she’s fairly new (only graduated 1.5 years ago). Yet, she’s shot a handful of weddings before and her pictures look great! She’s not as expensive as some of the well known photographers in my area. I’m just wondering if I should risk someone with less experience on my wedding day? I have a fairly large budget and she is well under, but we could use the money for extra appetizers or something. My mom is very adamant that I do not book a “new” wedding photographer. Any advice or ideas?

I think if you love her work and have seen examples of weddings she's shot, I would be inclined to book with her. Could you do an engagement shoot with her soon to see if you like her in person and the photos she takes of you before you book for the wedding?

Oh That’s a good idea! We considered his proposal our engagement photos (his friend used an old camera to capture the moment) before but we could always do a mini session even for fun.

In your situation it really depends if you need that money for something else. We had a strict budget and were able to find someone who had a amazing deal going for a bridal show. She could be a really good photographer and do an amazing job but since you have the budget I would probably go with someone more experienced if you find someone who’s pictures you like just as much. Just to have that peace of mind. If you find something else you really want to spend the money on go for it. Our photographer has more experience but only does weddings on the side, and we aren’t nervous at all. It’s all about the portfolio.

Jessica that’s a great idea! I liked the picture portfolio of my photographer but after the engagement session there was no doubt. Plus it helped me decided what I’ll do differently for the wedding. Specific shots etc

If you’re a fan of her work, I’d trust your gut! Everyone has got to start somewhere with building experience. Like a PP said, maybe try booking an engagement shoot first to see if that helps you make a decision!

My photographer had only been doing this for 4 (ish)years before my wedding, and I love his work!
My cousin hired a newish photographer for her wedding (I don’t remember how new) and she got great pictures!
So, just because someone is new doesn’t mean they are necessarily a risk. If you like their work and they’re in your budget, go for it!
But, if you’re leaning heavily towards them because of price and not their work. I’d keep looking at other options.

Just because someone is new to weddings doesn't make them bad. I used to work as a planner and I never had issues with new photographers because they were new. Just make sure you ask what her plan is for emergencies is like if her camera breaks, if she gets sick etc. You could ask how many weddings she has "second shot" for. Second shooting is when another photographer assists the lead photographer on the wedding day. That is how most wedding photographers start out. If you love her work and she has good answers to the above questions I would book her before her prices go up.

We have a "less experienced" photographer, and I LOVE her! As long as you like her work, then I think you will be just fine booking her and saving the money.
