photographer under $2000?!

It's-A-Love-Story, on May 19, 2015 at 8:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

I am so frustrated. I had NO idea wedding cost as much as they do. The one thing I thought i could splurge on was the photographer. Thinking around 1500. Uh, no. All the photographers I've looked at START at 2500. And that's for the basic package which is only 4 hours. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I can do?! And yes, I've looked at all the vendors in my area on here.

Recent graduates may be a good source. Also what area are you in?

Have you used thumbtack? You can put what you would like to pay and how much coverage you want and then they make you offers. I had one make an offer that is much lower than what is quoted on their webpage.

That is a tricky one. Photographers cost about that much. I did look a craigslist at one point when I was thinking of cutting my photography budget, there were photographers on there that were starting out that charged less. See if you have any connections in your community. Personally I decided to find a way to pay the $2,000 for a good photographer. I love my photographer and feel good about supporting her business. Look online beyond what is on wedding wire. Good luck!

The photographers we love are $2k in my area. Used to be (for the same people) $1.5-1.7k. Yay inflation!

Thumbtack makes vendors pay to bid on your work. No one I know (who is worth their salt) uses it.

You're looking at a prime date in high season; I would actually recommend going with four hours with a great photographer rather than more time with someone mediocre. And unfortunately, 1500 is under budget for most great photographers in most areas. Might be time to re-adjust the budget.

Check Thumbtack, but do your research. Don't spend less than $1500, but you should be able to find something decent for $2000 to $2500 regardless of area (FH and I are spending around there, and we live in NJ). Just do your research.

I am doing what Ceila suggested. My photographer is great but her 8 hrs is out of my range, even the 4 hrs at $1800 was pushing it but she is my splurg

I have my photographer for 4 hours and his services are $1,700.00 and that is after the referral I got for my vendor.

Remember this, ...your photos are the true, only real physical thing you keep from your wedding. Read the post about the bride who had her friend do the photography, she regrets it and there is another poster that is thinking of doing retakes because her photographer failed at her wedding too.

Photography is the one area you should spend good money on. Make up for it by DIYing other things.

Keep looking!! There are constantly new photographers who are up and coming that are trying to build their business. They are hard to find, but they exist. We ended up getting our package for 10 hours, 2 photographers, engagement session, wedding album and fill digital rights for 1800. He was just starting his own business at the time but had worked wedding before. Now he's almost 3000 because he is in such high demand, but we have our price locked in. It can be done, you just have to keep looking!!

No up and comers, okay? I've worked with them. They can't get it done. If you have limited time for photos, like most couples do, they cannot manage that time. They will miss vital things, not be able to judge lighting....

Cut other things but don't skimp on this.

I live in the greater boston area and we found (after LOTS of research) 2 photographers for 7 hours with an engagement shoot for $2350.. this was the cheapest we came across and our photographer was really flexible with the package! i recommend speaking to friends/ friends of friends to find out who they used, that's how we found ours..

also, change your avatar to something more individual and you may get more responses.

Every vendor is the most important vendor to some bride. But unfortunately we are all on a budget so you have to pick and choose. It's up to you to decide what's important to you and where you want to spend your money. You can pay less for a photographer but may get less quality photos. Maybe you will luck out and they will be great. With that said have you tried Groupon and living social.

I only half agree with Celia on this one. Ours worked out really well by using an up and comer, but he had worked weddings before, just not as part of his own business. It is a gamble though and we did get lucky. Ask a lot of questions before picking an up and comer.

I disagree with Celia too; from my engagement photos I'm super happy with my photographer. Including an engagement shoot and 7 hours on the day of (and a second photographer as well) it will be $1199. I know everyone says "don't pick photographers who are good at portraits because wedding photography is sooooo different" but that was why I chose the package with the engagement shoot; otherwise, I would have chosen her 6 hour package for $899. After taking engagement shots with her, I'm totally comfortable and confident she will capture our day perfectly.
