Photographer on a tight budget

Christine, on October 16, 2019 at 5:14 PM Posted in Rhode Island Planning 0 10
Hello! My FH and I are paying for our own wedding... I wanted to elope but he said our family would be devastated so we are doing a morning wedding and brunch for about 80-90 people about 20 miles outside of Providence, RI.

He does not want a photographer... I do. I haven’t been able to find any photographers under $1000 to present as a compromise. Everything I’ve read says that having our guests take pictures is a toss up at best. Since we are having a “big day,” I do want some decent shots of us and the ceremony.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There's plenty of good photographers who just want to expand their portfolio. E.g. college students. Find one on Craigslist or ask around Smiley smile I'm sure you can find one of those kind of photographers who will do it for free or deeply discounted

What about just hiring a photographer for like two hours to get the ceremony and some shots of you two and family?

I would for sure get a photographer, I wouldn't make that a "maybe" for vendors to hire. Could you reach out to a local community college with photography programs? In our area, there are a ton of photographers just starting out in their careers (usually you see them on Facebook) that would charge around that.

I'm part of a FB group, "RI Wedding Planning Buy/Sell, Advice". Post on there asking for photographers in your price point and exactly what you're looking for. There are lots of people just starting out who do great work on that page!

You could ask around local colleges for students who would like to do it and use some shots in their portfolios!!! Just an idea 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Amber Urey Photography! She’s out of York, PA. She photographed us in Maryland and only charged $700 for 4 hours! I absolutely love the sneak peak photos she’s shared with us so far!

Yes, try finding someone who's still building a portfolio! We found one on FB Marketplace who happened to also be running a special at that time. $150 for ceremony and formal photos ( 1 1/2 hours total). Without the special it would still have been only about $300.

I would ALWAYS recommend hiring a photographer!!! It's an important day and you want to make sure you have photos to capture the big moments. I know someone who relied on family and friends to take photos, didn't hire a photographer, and she now says that's the one thing she wishes she did differently. Maybe find other places to cut costs (flowers, or favors, or decorations or whatever) and figure out how to find a photographer within your budget. Also, I recommend you look on Thumbtack, The Bash and post on facebook. You might have friends who are amateur photographers just getting started or know someone who is. Facebook Marketplace is another place to look or even a local newspaper.

He will absolutely regret not having pro photos on your wedding day. Go to the local art school and ask to see portfolios of some students or ask pros what their half day fee is. Especially since you're doing an AM ceremony this shouldn't be too much.
