Photographer Not Responding--help?

Kathryn, on June 29, 2018 at 4:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

Hi everyone,

So we recently signed a contract with a photographer and were really excited about it. I have been to several events that he has covered, and I've always loved his photography. A friend of mine who used him for her wedding also gave him a glowing review.

However, his email response time hasn't been great so far. Several times, I've had to follow up on an email to him after a few days (or even weeks). This hasn't really been an issue until now, and we like his work enough that it didn't seem like a big concern. He has very limited availability this summer, so we tentatively planned an engagement session for Sunday (today is Friday). He was emailing me back consistently about it until I asked to confirm that it was included in the amount that we paid. (To be fair, he just agreed to do the engagement shoot over an informal email, and it wasn't in the contract).

Honestly, I won't be upset if the engagement shoot isn't actually included--we can either pay separately for it if it's not that expensive or just not do engagement photos. (Frankly, I don't really care that much!) But, I'm wondering how to proceed. The initial email exchange took place on Monday, and then I sent him a follow-up email yesterday (Thursday). If we are, indeed, going to do the shoot on Sunday, I would like to get it on the calendar! (I also don't have a phone number for him--which is probably my mistake). Help?!

If it's not in the contract it likely isn't included. How much does he charge for portraits?

$3000, but we’re in Chicago. Honestly I’m more concerned about his non-responsiveness than anything else. We were just going to do the engagement photos for a Save the Date.

If you had scheduled an engagement shoot and he's confirmed, then I think its confirmed (not sure about the price though). In terms of "non-responsiveness," you're wedding is a year a away, and right now, his priority is (and should be) the folks who have a wedding this summer. Once a photographer is booked, the other details (photo list, timeline etc) do not need to be scheduled until 3 months out (at the earliest). Trust he will respond when he actually needs to (May 2019). He's a professional and trust he knows when he needs to schedule everything to make it turn out. My photographer also took weeks to respond to emails in the months leading up my wedding, but she was incredibly responsive the week of the wedding (when she needed to be) and the photos were amazing.

Thanks, Katelyn! I guess my concern is more with the shoot that is supposed to happen tomorrow but still hasn't been finalized Smiley sad

At this point, I think I'm just going to email him and see if we can reschedule.
