Photo-sharing site??? - I know we kind of did this yesterday

Katrina, on August 10, 2011 at 11:59 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

I know there was some discussion yesterday (and in the past) about using photosharing sites for guests to upload their photos after the wedding. Especially as a "modern alternative" to the disposable cameras on the tables. However, I have been having a hard time finding one that is actually easy for guests to access. I set up a shutterfly account, and I love that they have the share site, so you get your own name, and that they don't delete photos, and that its free, but then I realized that in order for anyone to be able to upload their own photos they will have to create their own account with shutterfly. I saw that some ppl used this site, so how did that work out? I am having about 175 guests (not all of which will use the site) but will they get annoyed at having to sign up for a site just to be able to upload pics for one event? Does anyone have suggestions for this site or for others out there that might not require this?

They actually don't have to sign up. If you change the settings on the page you can have it so guests can contribute. The default is guests can see and comment, but you can make it so they can contribute.

I changed it to that - I clicked the contribute, but then we tested it - my fiance went on and tried to upload a pic, and the thing popped up that made him sign in. I doubled checked to make sure the contribute box was checked and it was. In the FAQs on the site it says they need an account to upload pics, which I found odd, since you can check contribute, so is there another step I don't know about?

Hmmm.. I have a share site from them... I just figured most people had it already, but I definitely see your point. Does it make a difference if you invite them to be a member? Can they be a member of your site w/o being a member of shutterfly? (sorry don't have access right now to my site)

Ok it appears they must be a shutterfly member:

Can others add pictures to my Share site?

Yes, if you set the permissions to allow visitors and/or members to be able to "contribute" to your site. Click here to see how to set site permissions. The person who's adding pictures to your Share site must have a Shutterfly account.

You can add them as a member, but I would either have to plug in everyone's email address, or wait for people to email me asking me to add them as members, which I would think would be more irritating for them. I considered creating a random email account (not giving the password to the email) and then using that to set up a "guest account", but I don't know if more than one person could sign in at once, or if that would be too confusing. Maybe people just won't care and will sign up lol.

What is that? I've heard of it, but does it let other people upload to your site w/o having to sign up?

What if you made up an account with shutterly, and gave the usename and password to your guest so they can sign in with that and instead of putting in their own info. And tell them to title the album with their name so you know whose pics it is

That was the best theory I could come up with so far. I made a random email account, used that email address and a password to create a "guest" account, and considered handing that out as the sign in info. And then title the albums with their name, like you said.

I also saw an old discussion about photoshare sites and it mentioned weddingturtle.com? Has anyone heard of this? I looked at it just now, and I don't think people need to do anything more than email their pics to the website. But I've never heard of it, so I'm a little iffy about it.

We are using winkflash and giving people our log on to do it. I don't have anything private on there and it allows for everyone to see everyone else's pictures.

I considered that as well, since there is an actual username and not an email, but that means people can delete others pictures, etc. Lol that makes it sound like I don't trust my guests. I also saw that people were using iRave, and I looked into that but I don't see anything about whether they delete photos, and I think that shutterfly and winkflash both said they keep the photos up "forever" - ie they don't delete them after a certain number of days

I wanted it to be extremely easy too and winkflash.com is set up so that your guest just sign on as if they owned the page only downside is everyone has complete access to all pictures and I've already had few of my guests delete pictures of themselves.. guests who did not download pictures at all just went on so they could check out the pictures and get rid of ones they didnt like ... That part sucks but oh well...

See that's exactly what I was thinking. I know of at least 2 people who absolutely hate having their pictures taken, and I can see them going onto the site and deleting every picture of themselves, and I do not want that.

I completely agree I wouldn't necessarily mind if they had asked because I personally hate pictures taken too but they deleted ones that had other ppl in it that I would have liked to have.. I could have cropped them out if it was the important to them now I just have to contact the original picture taker to get it back...
