Photo budget!

Katia, on February 13, 2020 at 5:17 AM Posted in Planning 0 22

How much of your wedding budget is being used up for photography/video? I feel like we were blessed to find a venue that for the price of per person includes our cake and cake cutting, set up and clean up, open bar, and a few other things that would otherwise be considered extra on the budget. We are already saving on decor by doing lots of DIY pieces, and my dress is not outrageously costly. I had originally fallen in love with one very affordable photographer, and though I am not out of love with them...I have come across someone that swept me of my feet with their work. The problem is my fiance thinks its too much money because its nearly double what the first one is, with only about 3 bonuses (ei. engagement session, 2 more hours, and 2nd photographer)! I don't want to be a brat about it, and thankfully hes at least willing to meet the 2nd photographer, but I'm afraid he''l still think its too much money.

It really just depends on the photographer. But usually you will pay more for the second one. I have heard that having a second photographer as nice as one you get more pictures and to they may catch some shots that the other photographer was not able to get. I would say if I choose to go for to photographers. I'm only paying $1,000 but that's not their photography rate. I'm doing kind of a small elopement with a few people. So it's going to be less work for them. I would say the average photographer can charge about 2 to $3,000, especially if it's a full wedding and you need two of them.

I’m spending 5k. 1 photographer, 2 videographers , 10 hours. A page where our guests can watch and download videos and pictures. A 5-7 minute trailer an 30 min video and then the full length film.

I think that is what it’s boiling down to figuring out just how much it will all really be. She told me that she’s willing to customize her packages to fit our needs, and we don’t need a second photographer. Her packages just come with one. Our venue isn’t huge and our wedding won’t be huge either. I’d be more inclined to go for 2 if we had over 100 people, but our max as of now is no more than 75 (and that’s about 10 too many if I had it my way)! We meet Monday so we will see what we can work through, but I don’t want to let her go. Her work is just that stunning! Thank you for the ballpark numbers, I appreciate it!

I think that’s an amazing deal. That’s just a little over what the package I’m looking at is and we get no video by choice. This photographers packages include a second shooter.

I told my fiancé photography was one thing I wanted room in the budget for! We did however get an amazing photographer while she was running a winter special which was a double bonus for us! Maybe just tell him why it’s so important to you?

Thank you, yes we did discuss that. That’s how we agreed to meeting her prior to making final decisions so he can see what I see in all her work.

Not a problem, although can I make a suggestion? Why don't you pay for the photography? My fiance doesn't see the purpose of spending so much money on a photographer and in his mind. He's like we could get a camera take our own pictures. But he's not thinking of it that we don't have the skill level that these photographers do. To me. I want a nice little ceremony, but I was willing to splurge on pictures because I wanted some professionals that do great work because I want to look back on those pictures and not the like these pictures were horrible. So maybe you to have the discussion that photography is important and you're going to put a little bit money towards that but then maybe cut back on some other things. For example, I did want a nice venue and luckily I came across one that does Sunday elopements for $500 because I wasn't going to spend thousands of dollars on a venue, but I am willing to spend about $1,000 on photography.

Photography was a big part of my very small budget. I'm spending 1800 on an engagement shoot and 5 hours on my wedding day with my photographer. Honestly, it was all I could afford but I got someone who I really like their photography portfolio so I feel like I did ok. I'm pretty sure I could have found someone less expensive for what I got but if I don't love their work then it's not worth it.

I was able to get a photographer for $1800. This includes bridals, engagements, and 8 hours of coverage. I would talk to the new photographer and see if they'd shave off a portion of the package to cut costs down!

Photography and videography was a priority for us! At the end of your wedding, all you have left is photos, videos, and memories. Memories fade with time, so amazing photos and videos were of the utmost importance for us!

We spent a total of around $5,000 for photography and videography. For photography we had 2 shooters with 6 hours of coverage and an engagement session. For videography we had 2 shooters with 6 hours of coverage, drone coverage, a 5 minute highlight film, full ceremony coverage, and full “special moments” footage (first look, dances, toasts, entrances, grand exit, etc.). It was worth every penny and then some!

Having 2 shooters is important because just 1 shooter will not be able to get multiple angles. So when you’re walking own the aisle, they can capture your fiancé’s face, but not yours. With 2 shooters, you will have both reactions captured. That is just 1 example.

Photography/videography is taking up 15% of our budget. The company that provides both services was having a sale in spring 2019 so we got over $1,000 off our package. Our package includes 8 hours of photography & videography coverage (2 people) with an assistant, engagement photos, 1-2 minute teaser video, 5-7 minute highlight video, full video of our ceremony, and a free photo booth all for $2,250! We, actually, booked this package even before we were engaged because it was such a good deal but was only going on for a week.

My photographer ask me $1300 and he’s bring someone else with him like a videographer he will tap all 3 days of my wedding and I think it’s a good price since he’s coming from out of town

We ended up paying $2600 for two photographers, 10 hours, and an engagement photo session. A couple of other folks that I know have gotten married relatively recently, and all of the photographers so far have been similar arrangements in the $**** range.

We’re spending 4K on photographer and $2500 on videographer. 8 hours of coverage. 2 photogs and 2 videographers so lots of coverage! Which is what we wanted! These products will last the longest of any of your vendors so that’s why we wanted to invest in them. Do what feels right!

We went over our initial budget. We found someone who would do a full day 2 shooters and an engagement session for 1400. Their photos were very nice but they were just the typical wedding photo. I could tell they had less experience once we compared them to some others. We then found another photographer who is 2200 for basically the same package. His photos were much more creative and moving. We decided to go with the more expensive option after a few long convos because you can only capture the day once. We didn't want to chance it. We're just skipping the professional video.

Thank you so much everyone for all of your insight and suggestions. The photographer I’m supposed to meet with Monday seems like they are more experienced as well as more of a candid capture the moment type of vibe where as the other one I was looking at seems more staged. I’m willing to pay more for experience, time and extras vs going the cheaper route and being unhappy with the end product.

We are getting married in NC and got a great deal on our photographer. We are investing $2500 for full day coverage with two photographers plus, rehearsal/rehearsal dinner coverage as well. We wanted the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner photographed to have more opportunity for family photo's and so our photographer can get a feel for our group. Our photographer also included our engagement photo's for free and gave us the rights to them so we can print them and use them for whatever format we would need.

There's some rule that like 10-15% of your wedding budget should go towards a photographer and videographer but that's hogwash. Quality, reliable, professional wedding photographers are not inexpensive. In my area, $3000 is pretty much the starting price point for good wedding photography services. Photography is important to me (I'm a photographer) so I would plan to spend at least that amount on wedding photography in my area regardless of whether we had decided to have a $10k wedding or a $50k one.
