People assuming they can bring their kids...

Anyone else having this issue? I know it's not proper etiquette to put "adults only" on the invitation so we listed it on our wedding website which was on a details card sent with the invites. I had a feeling my cousin and his wife would assume their 2 year old was invited which is exactly what happened. I had to tell her that we're not having any children at the wedding and that we hope they can make arrangements but understand if they can't make it. His wife is guilt tripping me saying they probably can't go now. I'm standing firm on this one. I don't understand why people assume their young child is invited to a wedding when they were not included on the invitation. Anyone else have a similar situation, and how did you handle it?

Our deadline is next week and so far the 2 seats have been reserved in your honor worked well.

FH had one friend text to confirm it was no kids. He just said no kids invited, she handled it fine and declined to come.

My aunt on the other hand has been super Whiney about her grandkids. My parents stood their ground. Turns out the parents didn't even want to bring them, grandma was just being rude.

Definitely stay firm, which I know will be difficult. We are addressing our invitations to just the adults so we're hoping people will get the hint. If not, I will have no problem saying "no kids". FH and I even decided no one under 21 (my cousin's kid will be 18 by the time we get married) to make it easier on ourselves.

I put and family expecting kids, not that I wanted them. Turns out only 1 baby is coming!!! Woohoo. But yeah stand your ground and offer suggestions for who can watch the kids, not that it's even your problem. It was very difficult for me and I caved but luckily worked out in the end. Good luck!!!

Ugh what is wrong with people? We have 3-4 couples with little kids and they're so 100% happy to leave those lil curtain-climbers at home. They want a fun night out.

I just do not understand why anyone would ever assume that their children are invited or why they would want to bring them in the first place. Luckily there are no small children on my side and FSIL just got married and set the precedent with FH's family of no kids so I don't expect to get any pushy family members, but who knows!

Luckily, there aren't any little ones on my side of the family yet (aside from a 12-year-old, but she doesn't count), but FH's cousins have tons. However, we all recently went to one of his cousins' weddings a few months back that was adult-only and no one seemed to have any issues not bringing their kids, so I'm hopeful we won't have any issues either.

Miranda and Tamara - I agree so much with the two of you. 6pm wedding in a church? Hour long ceremony? Reception does not start till 7:30 or so? Dinner not served till 8? Yes, let's bring a a toddler....where is that ever a good idea?

Ugh same problem! We put adult reception to follow on the invitations. People are annoyed that its no kids. I understand that for those who are coming out of town. But the wedding is from 6 to midnight with an open bar and 350 guests. Stand firm!

Where I grew up kids always come to weddings. I don't think I've ever been to an adults-only wedding. So it's possible some guests are from places like that so it just doesn't occur to them that children wouldn't be invited.

But if you don't want kids, as others have said, just continue to repeat adults only. Be very clear because if you try to avoid confrontation people will think it means there is wiggle room, and it's reasonable for them to think that if you waver or aren't clear.

Or you can be like my family, who hasn't invited kids to weddings for the last 50 years. No one, in our social circle/region expects their kids to be invited, or would take them to a formal, $$$, evening affair even if invited.

Ugh, we had his cousin tell us her 11 year old daughter was "heartbroken" she wasn't invited. Except for we don't spend any time with her because her cousin doesn't like to bring her around. I've had so many RSVP issues... it's just nutty to me the things people think are okay.

We are letting one of his friends bring their 2 year old. They are coming from California and are very good and close friends. If they don't bring him, they cannot come. We'd rather have them there. But even that wasn't "hey can we bring our son?" It was "the three of us will be there!". So frustrating!

Its only a guilt trip if you allow it to be. It also has to do with how well behaved the kids are. We had kids at my wedding and all were very well behaved. However, at the end of the day that is your choice since it is your wedding. If they don't come because their child isn't invited that is on them.

My FH's first cousin is doing exactly this for the ceremony. And unfortunately my FMIL told her to bring the 2 year old to the ceremony. We were furious and had to hire a babysitter, she's leaving him with their family babysitter during the reception so I'm not sure why she couldn't do the same during the ceremony, but whatever. Stand firm. Tell them unfortunately you can't accommodate for children. Maybe even see if you can offer a babysitter at the hotel, even though you shouldn't have too, maybe she'll get the hint that your not backing down? Lol and don't let them guilt anyone else in your family to taking their side. (Eye roll!)

Well I'm glad I'm not alone! I've stood firm even though I did feel bad when my cousin messaged me the following day I broke the news to his wife. Apparently since they already booked the hotel, they're still going to be coming to the town that the ceremony is held in which is an hour and a half away from where they live. He told me they were going to keep the reservation and turn it into a family day kind of thing. His parents are attending the wedding and will not be staying long as they are not social and do not drink, so I told my cousin if he can get a sitter (aka his parents who are more than likely going to dine and ditch) then he and his wife are welcome to come and make an appearance if they so choose which he seemed excited about. I think the wife doesn't want to leave the kid behind and my cousin really wants to be at the wedding so it's unfortunate that they can't work those details out but I'm standing firm and not having any children at the wedding. I already paid for their two plates so I'm wondering if I should ask my caterer to wrap those up and I'll send them home with my cousin and his wife if they show up? lol I know that sounds stupid, but I hate wasting money and food!

We had a guest write their babies name on the rsvp. We addressed the envelope to Mr. And Mrs. Not to the family, but they didn't take the hint. We had to contact them and say sorry but no kids. Fortunately they were very understanding. I was so irritated at first though.

As much as I want a child free wedding... I have a little boy myself. He will be four when we get married so he's our ringbearer so we have to invite the kids. But I echo everyone else, stand firm.

I had a friend text me a picture of a dress for a toddler saying, "Look what I bought her to wear at your wedding!" AFTER she had received the invitation addressed only to her & her husband. It was super awkward & I hated to do it, but I had to gently break it to her that no kids were invited due to capacity issues & nearly everyone on the guest list has at least one kid. She ended up coming by herself with her husband staying at home with the kids. It sucks, but you have to put your foot down & be prepared for them to not show up. Or for only one out of the couple to show up...

I suppose I'm lucky because most people are all about a kid free night. And we are allowing children lol.
