Pearls!?

Jess, on June 5, 2018 at 9:39 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 28
Hey ladies! I am getting married in just 5 days, and my nana asked me to wear her pearl necklace for my ceremony. The necklace belonged to her grandmother and has been worn by my great grandmother, my nana, and my own mother on their wedding days. I love the idea of the pearls being worn by so many women in my family but I started having second thoughts when a friend told me they were, “too old fashoned for a 26-year-old.” Am I thinking too much into their comment?! Are pearls not popular for wedding jewelry anymore? This is the necklace (it’s from the early 1900’s)

I love pearls. They are timeless. Don't worry about the age thing - if worn correctly, pearls can truly add that extra something to your ensemble. What does your dress look like?

My dress has a lace bodice and a relatively simple bottom.

I think these are lovely and with the sentimental value behind them, you may regret not wearing them. Pearls are not old fashioned, there actually the exact opposite timeless an essence of beauty, thats why they are popular wedding jewelry.

Even if they were old fashioned, they're not, the tradition and connection to your family history is so lovely I'd wear them. If your friend says anything else about it let them know that you're wearing them happily

I think it will be absolutely perfect and classic. You dress has just enough detail to go perfectly with the pearls - the pearls don't compete. I feel like they compliment each other.

Another bonus is the sentimental value. It'll mean everything to your family.

I wore my mom's pearls as my something borrowed... I'm 24. Wear them! They're timeless and elegant and look gorgeous without being over the top! I loved how Mom's pearls completed my bridal look! If you love the idea, do it! I think they would be beautiful with your dress.
Couldn't help but post a picture... they look good with almost everything!!

What a beautiful idea! I wish I had a family set of pearls that I could have worn. Pearls are timeless and so classy, and as PP have said they compliment your dress!

And pearls are still in. It's not old fashioned. That's just one's opioion. Pearls are classic and elegant. Please wear your grandmothers pearls! Wear them under your gown! But don't disappoint grandma. I don't have a mother and no grandmothers. I would do it!

Pearls are my favourite! My grandmother gave me her string of pearls when I was 22 and my FH bought me matching pearl earrings and bracelet to match. I wear them constantly to weddings and events and will more than likely wear pearls for my wedding next year (will be 26). Get loads of compliments by people of all ages. You have nothing to worry about. they just look so classy and can be matched with almost anything for a gorgeous look.

Also, if you feel like the necklace is too short you can always get an extender so they hang a little lower.

Beautiful! I do think the pearls go well with your dress (which looks similar to the top of mine) and I love the colors of your flowers 😋

I disagree with your friend. Pearls are timeless, and these are absolutely beautiful! I think this is a great way to not only honor tradition but to incorporate some very special individuals into your wedding.

Thank you to everyone who replied! I was so excited to wear the pearls, so when my “friend” said this, I thought, “why would she try to make me feel bad about it!” I have pearl earring to match and I will wear them with pride! I’ll be posting a picture after the wedding for those who are curious 😍

Just a tip because your necklace looks a lot like mine... consider taking them to a jeweler you trust to look at. My necklace is in good shape and perfectly fine to wear to dinner, but the local jeweler thought the string might not withstand a night of dancing and sweating. We had them restrung for about $30 and I feel much better about it.

Thanks for the advice Rica! I was only planning on wearing them for the ceremony since I am wayyy to paranoid about something happening to them at the reception 😖

Make sure you have someone to trust to hold onto them once you take them off then! At a friend's wedding 2 years ago, she had a sentimental necklace she wore for the morning and between then and the end of the night, it went missing. Fortunately there were a few of us there who were still sober, so we went on a hunt and it took over 35 extremely stressful and panicked minutes to find them--that the newlyweds then had to pay for after the fact because we weren't out of the house by the midnight deadline!

So if you don't want to have them restrung, make sure a very trusted friend puts them in a very safe place and that you know where that safe place is.

Good luck! They're gorgeous. I plan to wear the pearls my mother passed down to me when I got my graduate degree, so you're very much not alone. Smiley winking

I'm 31 and I love pearls. My dress is full of Pearl's, my necklace, headpiece, bracelet, earrings and watch all have pearls. I think your friend is wrong. I'm sure it would mean the world to your nana to wear something so special to the women in your family

My grandma also gave me her mother’s pearls to wear on the wedding day, they’re beautiful but if not for them I probably wouldn’t have worn a necklace with my dress but because they’re so sentimental I’m going to make it work. I think it’s so lovely to wear something worn by so many women in the family. I also think they will look beautiful with your dress
