Pear shape with a fitted dress?

Future Mrs. E, on April 26, 2019 at 4:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
Hello All! I'm looking for dress input. I'm tall (5'9) with a pear shape (33-26-40). I look very hippy when I wear fitted dresses and skirts, not not necessarily in a bad way, just very noticeably. My mom has a weird thing against fitted dresses and skirts on me, she never fails to point out how hippy I look in anything fitted. Normally I just ignore her opinion but it's really starting to bug me with wedding dress shopping. Every dress other than a full skirted a-line or ballroom shows my hips to some extent and she always comments negatively on them. I do not want to wear something poofy so she has been less than positive about every dress I've liked.
I previously chose to have a (slim a line) dress made (by anomalie), in large part because dress shopping was going no where positive, but recently came across a used dress online that I like very, very much but it's pretty fitted. I showed it to my sister, who loved it, but my mom absolutely hates it. The big issue is that it's a used dress online so I can't try it on in person to disprove my mom's hip hating. Advice? Anyone with my meaurments have pictures in a fitted wedding dress to share?

Girl, being hippy is a problem I would love to have lol. Have you tried on any dresses with a similar silhouette to the one that you found online? That should give you a pretty good idea of the shape. Maybe you could even find a nearby salon that carries the dress, or something similar, to try it on?

My advice? Wear what makes YOU feel best. If you want a fitted dress, get a fitted dress! I know pleasing mom is important. But what's more important is that YOU feel your best. I have a significantly larger lower body than upper. Wouldn't quite say pear shaped, but we had to order my dress in a 10 just to accommodate my butt lol. Lower body was a 10, upper body would have been a 4. My dress was also fitted. But just like in SYTTD on tv, once I was all "jacked up" with a veil and whatnot, holding the shop bouquet, dimming the lights and standing on the pedestal, my "booty critics" finally silenced lol. Go for what makes you feel best.

Wear whar you want to wear! I wouldn't even care about those negative comments. You are wearing it, not mom. I also have a larger hip compared to my top half, and I am wearing a trumpet / mermaid style dress! Smiley smile

Don't change what you like or what you think looks good on you. Change how you are shopping. That is, only go shopping alone or with supportive people from now on. Don't show your mom your choices. Only show her after you have bought it, or, better yet, tell her you want her to be surprised on your wedding day. She will be so overcome with emotion then she won't think to criticize you! (hopefully)

Sometimes ya just can't let Momma's opinion get to you. You gotta do what makes you feel good. Embrace your hips, and wear a dress you love.

Wear what makes you feel good! I am also very curvy with big hips. And my dress is a fit and flare. My cousin was "like God damn, you have to get that dress." The first time I had tried it on in the store.. I feel so sexy and elegant in my dress.

I honestly would stop taking my mom dress shopping. You're hippy, it is what it is. Wear what looks good on you and who cares if it emphasizes your hips. It bet it looks fantastic. I'm extremely curvy and for a while I didn't want anything clingy. Now I don't care and my dress looks fabulous. I have curves, people can just deal with it.

Thank you for all the support ladies! I managed to find the dress at a shop not too far away so I got to try it on. What do you guys think? The illistration is the other dress option, but the skirt would be a crepe A line.

That dress looks AMAZING! I have big hips as well and I’m going with a fit and flare; I feel comfortable in it, it’s fun to wear and I like my body in the dress — I say tune out the critics and focus on people that are willing to celebrate and uplift you in what you want to wear!

You look gorgeous! Your hips are noticeable, but in a really good way. It's a very flattering dress. FWIW, I'm bigger than you, but my measurements are 42-34-47, and I'm wearing a mermaid dress. It makes me feel very sexy, and it's so much more comfortable than a wider skirted dress.

Find something a-line or Empire waisted or even with a drop waist. Do not risk looking like a stuffed sausage on your big day! My measurements are like yours, only bigger! Brides often fall in love with The Dress when they should be falling in love with the way they LOOK in the dress! Even though Mermaid-style is really in fashion these days, not everyone can successfully pull that look off! As much as I hate to say it, trust your mother on this one. She is not trying to be mean...she is trying to protect you from an unflattering look.

.... I'm not sure if you saw the pictures I posted wearing the dress in question but I certainly don't think I look like a sausage.

You look GORGEOUS! Like wow! You look so feminine and just beautiful! It’s your day and you should wear what you want. Mom isn’t wearing the dress. 😊
