Peanut allergies...

KarenM, on January 6, 2014 at 8:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

UGH. My sister is deathly allergic to peanuts, and avoids all nuts at all costs. I am trying to ensure that she can eat about 85% of the menu items, but everything seems to contain nuts - especially salads and chicken dishes. I don't want to have mundane food, but I seriously worry about her eating anything by accident that might trigger an attack? Any suggestions? We're having Virginia ham, and mac and cheese bar, but other than that, I'm at a loss. My caterer will make just about anything.

Your caterer should have a nut-free menu available. Nuts are a common allergy and I'm sure s/he has run into this situation before.

A Greek Salad with olives and feta and a Minestrone or chicken dumpling soup should be safe. a friend of mine's son is horribly allergic to pnuts and tree nuts and he is typically safe with those tasty options.

I think your caterer should have words of advice about this. I would also consider having a special plated meal just for her. It may be easier in the long run.

Great idea. I never thought about asking for a special meal. I'm sure my caterer can be accommodating. Thank you :-)

You could have chicken with asparagus, sun dried tomatoes, provolone cheese with a lemon butter type sauce.

What DO you have that has nuts in it? Nut allergies can be pretty bad, even by contamination. If she is super sensitive, I would make the whole thing nut-free. Even if you have nut-free dishes, if someone puts the wrong spoon in the wrong place, you might have an ambulance showing up at your wedding before the limo.

We had two people at our wedding who have some pretty severe nut allergies, especially peanut. We just informed our caterer about who they were and what table they were sitting at. Didn't have any problems.

Your caterer should have advice on this, they should have a nut free menu. I think it's nice if you have a separate meal for your sister, but speaking from personal experience, if she is that allergic to nuts sometimes even just being near them, or being in contact with someone who has eaten nuts can trigger an allergic reaction. I personally think it's best if your whole menu is 100% free that way there is no risk to your sister. My meal is chicken in a mushroom wine sauce with vegetables, and my caterer has guaranteed it to be 100% nut free.
