paying for ministers hotel room

Jennifer, on May 23, 2012 at 6:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

So our minister has known that the wedding will be out of town (about 1.5 hour drive) since the beginning. When I confirmed the payment she has now asked us to pay for her hotel room Friday night after the rehearsal into saturday for the wedding. Our ceremony is not until 4 in the afternoon on saturday. Is it standard that the bride and groom would pay for the hotel room? She doesn't have to stay so I'm not sure what is custom. We don't have a huge problem paying the $80 but we are on a strict budget and she has never mentioned this before.

I woudn't pay it, but I also wouldn't require her to be there for the rehearsal. I charge extra for my rehearsals because they are just as time consuming as the ceremony itself, but a vast majority of the time, my couples don't choose to do one.

Whatever the situation, if you didn't agree to a fee at the beginning, you shouldn't agree to it now.

I wouldn't pay for a hotel, instead I might offer to pay for gas if she has to drive the 3 hours and perhaps a small gift. Did you sign a contract? If it's not in the contract, you are not required to pay.

I'm assuming you are paying this person and you have a contract?

We are paying her and for the survey thing we had to do. There is no contract, just the emails back and forth about everything.

We agreed on the cost upfront, including an additional fee for rehearsal and travel to rehearsal.

    I would not pay it.

Then whatever costs there are should have been agreed on first. If worse comes to worse, ask her to put together a processional cue sheet and have your banquet manager run the rehearsal.
