Paying $$ for a Cake Tasting?

Future Mrs. 27, on March 4, 2015 at 8:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 37

Did you have to pay money when you went for your cake tasting? I have never heard of this until today so I am just curious if this is the norm.

We didn't pay for ours either. However if you wanted to upgrade and taste more then we had to pay ten dollars.

No, never heard of it. I would never pay for it. They charge so much for wedding cakes and make a profit off of them- & that's why they should offer a free tasting. Thats how they get business.

That's ridiculous, no way should you pay for a cake tasting!

Nope, we didn't pay for the tasting. They even sent us home with cake for our parents to try and some cookies. Not a dime was spent.

No, we def did not pay anything for the tasting. In fact, the bakery we went with, assembled on the spot a more "special request" cake for DF with a filing that wasn't on the original tasting plate. This was one of the 2 factors that we went ahead and chose her for our cake.

We are allowed a complimentary tasting with whatever flavors they have available (usually leftovers from the previous weekend's wedding). If we want to request specific flavors we have to pay extra.

I didn't pay for it, but I have heard of it being done. I've definitely seen this float around on WW before too and there were other women who had paid for it.

I think usually though it's if you haven't signed a contract and the tasting fee is applied to your cake if you end up ordering, no?

Guess it depends on where you live. around where I live I've yet to hear of someone charging for a cake tasting. my guess is beause there's so much competition. I'm sure most know that if they charge, the couple will just go to one of the many other places that don't.

but when I was checking out places back in my home town, most places charged though they were offering a lot less. for the tasting and for the same priced cake.

a while back when I lived in another state, I was at a cake tasting and the cupcake tasted terrible! woman claimed it was frosted in butter cream, but I'd tasted butter creme and that was not it!

it tasted just like the stuff I use to grease my cake pans with, I'm sure she used the wrong stuff!

we decided not to use the place and were told flat out "you don't have a choice, we're the only bakery in town that does wedding cakes" bride ever got calls from the bakery wanting her to call them so they could 'finish the cake order for the wedding' even after being told flat out they would not being making the cake for the wedding

the wedding and a amazing cake from a private cake maker and there was no regrets!

I haven't heard of that, unless it's more than a certain amount of people going. The closes thing I heard was putting down a CC and if you didn't show or cancelled less than 24 hours in advance they charged $25 (which seems fair enough).

I am referring to bakeries in San Diego, so maybe different places have different rules. I would think it's just like any other vendor- complimentary consultations.

I had to pay at two tastings I went to. The one we ended up going with the money was credited towards our final total. I saw tasting fees associated more with bakers who don't also have retail open to the public bakeries.

Ours was free and I have never heard of anyone having to pay for that or for Catering tastings. Could you call around to some other bakeries and see if they charge ? At least that way, you would know if that was common in your area. Good luck and Best wishes !
