Passports...how long does it REALLY take?

So, we had to wait for FH mother to try to locate his birth certificate, which she never did! So I made his 29 year old butt just order one, and imagine that...it was shipped OVERNIGHT for a cost of just 50 dollars, lol. But that being said, we are behind our established timeline for ordering our passports. The US travel department states it takes 4-6 for regular submissions, and 2-3 wks for expedited services, but I have heard what I hope are "exaggerated stories" of how it can take months Smiley sad That being said we are thinking EXPEDITED is the way to go...better safe than sorry...

But out of curiosity, how long did it REALLY take for you to get your passport in the mail?

Regular time is usually 6 weeks. I never expedited mine so not sure how much sooner it would be if you do

It used to take a long time to get a passport when they were first required for travel to Mexico and Canada. I think the wait times are much quicker now. When I renewed my passport I remember it only being a few weeks...but I don't exactly remember :/

We both got our passports (and we applied at different times) in under two weeks. It wasn't expedited.

I have mine expedited and got them back in days. Of course to get them renewed it is not much time.

It depends on if there is a problem with the paperwork. My daughters FH had just moved and we had his expedited and did not get it. It was taken care of pretty quick but it was a pain to worry about it.

    4-6 weeks is normal.

I got mine in 3 weeks. We didn't expedite. But the sooner the better.

I had to get mine expedited for work travel - and it was received in about a week...

My fiance ordered his using regular service and eventhough they told us the standard 4-6 weeks - he received his in about 2-3 weeks...

If you have 13 weeks, i would not pay the extra for expediting unless you are really worried about it, but I would just order right away and not pay the extra. Smiley smile

    Good luck!

We are traveling to London in late May and both had to renew our passports. We expedited because a co-wroker of mine had to wait 6 months for her passport to arrive and that was last year.

Most people wont be waiting that long but I dont want to take the chance that one of us is that person.

We ordered ours expedited last week actually. Smiley smile

Here is the catch... if you don't pay for expedited, and it doesn't get here in time... do you have a back up plan? How much are you going to lose if you can't go on the planned honeymoon?

I expedited mine for personal travel a few years ago and it came in about a week or so. I would say to do it just for the peace of mind that it'll come on time.

Charlotte that is a good consideration. Honeymoons are not cheap. We are booking through a travel agency that offers 100% cancellation for ANY reason, but who wants to have to cancel their honeymoon!

Yeah, I wouldn't pay for expedited in your case.

I can't remember exactly what the deal was, but there was one bride whose FH had a problem with the passport. Something didn't work with one of the documents, and then it took 7 weeks or so to get the passport. I know this sounds really inarticulate, but I can't remember what the problem was. I just remember that they had to resend some stuff. It was the only real *delay* I've heard of.

We ordered ours, normal delivery, correct paperwork and address, address on the mail box, no po box... and it was deemed "undeliverable" and returned. When we called to follow up on the location of it, we were told they couldn't deliver it and they will mail it out again.

If you have the safety of 100% cancelation, then I guess you will be ok if the unexpected comes up.

Hayley is right, but you do have 13 weeks. So if you apply now, you have enough time to deal with any potential issues.

Hayley, that is just crazy. Situations like that make me go hmmmm, and my very reason for making this post...the "what if's." But I guess in that case even if you expedited it the same thing would have happened I suppose Smiley sad How long did it end up taking? And yes, the two main reasons I wanted a travel agency: the "perks" they can get me and having the peace of mind of traveler's insurance since just about EVERYTHING else connected with the wedding is NON-refundable. But I defintely don't even want to fathom the thought of not going.

Mrs S- you dont sound inarticulate at all Smiley smile . And through these posts, I am realizing that delays do in fact do happen, but just not nearly as common as I initially thought!

I ordered mine in 2010 and received mine within 4 weeks - no expedited fee, no issues.

My daughter lost hers a couple of months ago and ordered a replacement. It took 3 weeks to come in. No expedited fees either.
