Passport Timeline

Anne, on March 12, 2017 at 7:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 26

FH can't find his passport and mine expires in October 2017. We are leaving for our honeymoon in Europe on 30 June 2017. FH tells me he cannot gather all the necessary documents to submit for a replacement passport until the last week of March due to work and other commitments. If we submit our paperwork by the first week in April, do we have enough time to get our passports back if we use the expedited processing?

I'm a nervous nelly and FH is telling me we have plenty of time so I should stop worrying.

Anyone in the same boat with the time crunch?

I'm pretty sure it's possible to expedite, but it costs more.

Why are you asking us? Wouldn't it be easier just to Google?

You'll probably have to pay the rushing fee, although they do generally take less time than the website says. It just gives the worst case scenario. Or, that is my experience at least.

I just renewed my passport. I received my new one in the mail 30 days after I sent it in.

Idk where your at but I got mine in a month and I know here in Florida you can go to a place in Miami and they will.give you your passport the same day. Its a bit more money but I would call your clerk of courts and see if there is a place that can give you your passport the same day.

You FH should be fine . I'm not sure where you will be traveling to but some places wont allow entry if your passport will be expiring within 3-6 months. I would look into it so you don't have any issues with your passport either.

My passport came rather quickly as well. Can't remember but quicker than they told me.

An expedited passport renewal takes 2 - 3 weeks. However, I am not sure if that timeline applies when the passport is considered lost.

I'm asking because I assume people on here may have had a similar experience. I'm in VA and there is a place in DC that does same day but they are only open M-F and FH can't take off work during the week. I'm ok with paying more to get it done.

Thank you for the real life examples folks. It does make me feel better.

Yeah his being "lost" seems like a problem whereas mine is simply a renewal.

Are you renewing or getting one for the first time?

My renewal I just needed to fill out the application and send in my old passport with a new picture.

Got it back in 5 days via mail. I did not pay for expedited shipping.

    This was in February.

My passport was a first time application, and I got it in about a month. I agree with what FutureMrsLopez said about some places not allowing entry if your passport is close to expiring. That would make me nervous if I were you. I would make sure you renew your passport too. FYI, you can update your passport with your new married name for free within a year of getting your new passport, so that shouldn't be too big of a deal.

Print out the necessary documents on the travel.gov website, make an appointment with the county clerk's office, not the post office....pay the expediting fee and you're golden. I got mine renewed in 3 weeks after my appointment.

I just submitted for mine at the end of January and got my passport in 5 weeks. I think you'd be fine! You can pay to have it expedited. My friend went to the place you're talking about because she needed a passport in less than 3 weeks and it got turned around very quickly for her!

Yes, I'm renewing mine and FH needs to get a new one. I had no idea the county clerk does renewals. The State Dept website and all others suggest the post office. Thank you JFP.

You should be fine. The passport turn around is a lot quicker than it used to be.

It should be a quicker turnaround when it's just renewing your passport. When I first applied for my passport, it only took two weeks to come in without paying for expedited process. You'll have plenty of time!

I mailed my documents in for a renewal the second week of January and still have not received mine. They're currently running at a 4-6 week turn around. You can pay to expedite. Usually around $250 a passport.

I just renewed mine and it will take a month to receive my passport. It takes about a month to receive it, but you can expedite it to receive it in 2 weeks. You will need to renew yours since they will not allow you to travel 6 months before your expiration date.
