I'm still 16 months out from my original wedding date, and I'm sick to death of planning and budgeting. I have decided to throw in the towel and have a small, intimate wedding in the US Virgin Islands. My fiance and I are very excited, as are our siblings and his parents. My only issue is my parents! When I told my mom she said she wasn't excited because traveling makes her nervous because of her agoraphobia (but she still manages to go to Denver twice a year to visit my sister). My dad flat-out refuses to fly over water. I'm so bummed! This is my dream, but now I feel guilty for wanting it. My fiance is in love with the idea and so am I. What to do???

Jenn, there are bridges connecting Manatee County & Sarasota County to several islands (keys) -- Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Lido Key, Siesta Key, Casey Key, Manasota Key --google them, they are beautiful. Palm trees, beaches, motels/hotels, great restaurants. Anna Maria Island is advertising itself as the wedding capital of Florida.

My only issue with the Florida Keys is that I spent quite a lot of time there with an ex-boyfriend and I don't want him in my thoughts or memories on my wedding day lol! So far, everyone is on board with our USVI plan- except my dad. I'm waiting until he has a chance to get his health problems worked out (in the next couple of months) and then I'll talk to him about it.

If it's a money thing, FH and I will help him out there. If it's just fear of flying over open water... well, don't they have pills for that??? Smiley winking

I'll give him Sharon's theory- plane crashes over water, there's just a little splash and everyone's fine!

See if you can get them a cruise when your having your wedding. I f yo9u like a sunny out door theme you might consider Vegas. Some people are against it, but I think they have a lot to offer for weddings. Here is a web sight that has all venues and all pricing for ceremonies and reception. It's an quick and easy way to look at every thing in one place so you don't have to jump around from website to website.

Jenn, we had some similar issues when we planned our Destination Wedding also. Most of our family wasn't thrilled, but we really didn't want the typical formal wedding. We decided on Sanibel Island for ours - it's very laid back (much like us), quaint, and absolutely beautiful. Some of our guests weren't thrilled about travel, but the trip to Florida was easy to plan or drive, and didn't require the complexities of passports/etc. Plus, after they started planning, many of them made it a mini vacation which loosened them up for our reception party! hahaha! There's plenty of ways to do a wedding on the cheap there - Sanibel Community House (potential reception venue), public beaches, etc. I've been documenting our wedding planning process and research, hopefully it can help you! http://www.mysanibelwedding.com
