Paper and Plastic dinnerware for an outdoor reception?

Weird question, but to save costs we are looking at using either paper or plastic plates for our wedding reception, because our venue isn't normally a wedding venue and would be hard to wash everything. I have found some plates, cups, and silverware that look real and have great reviews.

So my question is for the ladies that have gone the paper/plastic route, did you set everything on your tables like normal place settings? or did you just let your guests get them when they get their food? We would have dinner plates, dessert plates, champagne flutes, and normal cups.

I know its a weird question, but it has been stressing me out, so please be kind.

I love that place setting! I'm glad I saw this thread. I hadn't really thought about already having the cutlery placed!

It's pretty common at the outdoor weddings I've been to. At least 2 weddings I went to last year had the heavy duty gold/silver plastic plates for buffet and cake. In fact, a few professional catering companies I got quotes from suggested these plates instead of the real dishes because its cheaper for the host and it cuts down on cleanup time for the catering company to re-crate and wash them all.

We used compostable palm leaf plates, and we set them on the tables on top of the chargers. I loved how they looked, they are far more environmentally friendly than plastic, and it was a lot less expensive than paying for rentals (and the associated cleaning fees).

We used plastic plates, but we got some inexpensive metal silverware. (At the cost, we could have thrown it out afterward, but we elected to take it home and wash it.) Our concern about plastic silverware is that it tends to break easily.

Chargers with paper plates is a bit of an oxymoron.

We got hard plastic plates (look super nice and like real plates and their sturdy but their plastic) and plastic metal cutlery (once again durable plastic not the flimsy kind). We got it all at Sams Club Smiley smile

I am having an outside reception, it's a simple wedding, not a big fancy shindig. I am using the heavy chinet dinner plates, they will be stacked at the beginning of my buffet. Most of the weddings I have been to around here use nice heavy paper plates, or colorful plastic plates, and no one thinks anything of it.

This is what I was going to suggest. Bamboo/wood plates and cutlery will be sturdier and more environmentally friendly too. I would set the table with cutlery but, keep plates near the food.

I'd worry that plastic cutlery will be hard to eat with and if the plate is not very strong your guests may end up wearing your food if it gives out when they are carrying it to the table.

I think with they type of food we are having the plastic cutlery shouldn't be a problem. If we were serving steak or something like that I would definitely have normal cutlery!

I came to comment basically what everyone else did. But now I'm on the hunt for rose gold plastic silverware.

Anyway were doing a buffet with the nice plastic plates near the line. Cups and silverware will be placed on the tables already.

I tend to agree, I had zero interest in chargers but my MIL purchased them and then took them with her for the parties she throws at her home. They did look beautiful though, oxymoron or not.
