No, this is a real thing, and I can 100% see how owls are available to do this.

Also, yeah, no, owls are not exclusively nocturnal, and it's not cruel. Owls can be trained.

How else would they have made Harry Potter?

But seriously, I kinda like this.

    In all seriousness though..

What made you want an owl as a ring bearer?

Ok. I want an owl now. Looking into trained birds in my area. Our rings are cheap anyway, who cares if something happens.

Also, re: owls, worry more about pellets than poop. Yummy.

@Future!Mrs.Meyers: I just love birds! And I think it's really cool. Although it's kind of looking like I'm out of luck..

@Justine- I am sorry you can't find anything... I will admit that I can't understand because birds scare the ba-jesus out of me.

Sweet tap dancing Jesus, really? Animals are not props. Yes, I have a lot of dogs in my weddings, but they are family members. And yes, they are unpredictable and just as finicky as your average four year old ring bearer, but that, at least, makes sense.

I swear, sometimes my own industry grosses me out with the excess that people consider to be cute, trendy and/or stylish.

Celia, people use birds to hunt, I see nothing wrong with a bird then flying a ring somewhere. I really don't. If someone aws like "I want your goat to walk down the aisle" I'd be like "Killer, let's do it!" and because they're trained, they'll come to me.

A "prop" to me is more like, if you have the animals in a cage to look at, or some weird zoo like thing. This is kind of what a trained owl does, so let him do it.

I know you didn't ask for any opinions, but while it is fun (in theory), it's really not practical. And even if you can find it, it's likely to be really expensive. It's one of those things where you have to say "do I really want to spend x percentage of my budget on this ONE LITTLE thing?"

Not to mention, a bunch of venues would likely say hell no.

In the last few years I've really realized how animals are used as tools. It's not about bad treatment, but it's about work animals being work animals. Horses ride. Goats pack. Chickens lay eggs. Sled dogs pull. Birds hunt.

All animals should be treated with respect and kindness, but that doesn't mean they aren't meant do/don't want to work.
