Overweight and looking for a dress

amandal0514, on January 17, 2016 at 11:47 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I'm about 60lbs overweight and it seems like it's all in my stomach and thighs. I've always been thin but never lost the weight I gained with being pregnant with my son (he's almost 4!) There's been a few friends who I've run into that thought I was pregnant again so that tells you how my stomach looks Smiley sad

It's a lot of the reason I haven't even went to look at dresses yet. I know I'm going to be disgusted with myself. I'm working on losing some weight before the big day but with it being just 2 months away, it won't be much.

So is there anyone who can offer some advice on what style dress to look for? Should I bother with trying to get some type of undergarment to help hold it all in?

Try on a bunch of different dress shapes, you might be surprised at what you like. Maybe look at a corset back? They can help pull everything in. You will look beautiful no matter what :-)

I'm assuming you're planning to buy off the rack since you've put this off so long. It stinks that you feel "disgusted" and I hope you'll get to a place where you won't use such a negative word to describe yourself. For dresses, I would say be open to any style your consultant pulls, you never know until you try it on. Look for dresses with side ruching, it'll help with the tummy area. For a heavy chest, I find off the shoulder or halter styles better in making me look less top heavy. Here's a quick example I found.

A ballgown or A-line would probably work well and you probably wouldn't need lower body shapewear. I do agree with 714 though to try on other shapes because you never know.

Finding the right dress starts with your head. You need to be open to looking at yourself in the mirror with a wedding dress on and being happy with what you see. Even if you are not in the physical shape that you want, remember that you are beautiful and obviously someone else thinks so too which is evident by the fact that you're looking for a wedding dress!

Start by finding the shape and fabric you feel comfortable in. Don't be afraid to play with accessories like belts/sashes, attachable straps and sleeves, jewelry, ect. to make it extra you which can make you feel even more special in the dress you choose.

As far as undergarments...spanx always make me feel better about myself lol they just hold everything in nicely and make me feel more secure. Happy shopping and best of luck! :-)

I hear ya, I carry all my weight in my stomach and bootay! I would try on different styles, see what you're comfortable in, you never know! A-line and ballgown hide the lower tummy, thighs, and butt well many times.

Here is my dress, I just tried it back on again this week for the first time since I bought it in August. I've gained some weight since then, but the structure of the dress is very forgiving and makes me feel like my problem areas are hidden. Good luck with the shopping, I hope you have fun and find the dress that makes you feel beautiful!

Most women don't return to the flat stomach they had after children. I still have that "pooch" from DS and that was 9 years ago! It's been there when I've been heavier and thinner.

I recommend going with a structured dress with boning in the bodice to the waist, which should smooth out the lumps and bumps. I'm actually not a Spanx person, and this is how I looked in a structured dress.

I too have problems with weight in these areas I tried on all kinds of dresses and ended up with a ballgown. Empire waist can look good also but be careful because too high of a waist can make you look pregnant. Here is a pic of my dress...there is one out there for you, you just have to find it!

I have the same issue. I purchased an A-line dress with a V-neck. I looked like I had lost 30 lbs. No kidding. I also wore spanx.

I would try a mermaid dress! It will help your curves stand out. I've noticed with ball gown look it make you look wider than you really are, esp if you have bigger bust. Also if u just go on a veggies and fruit diet you will see results but ALL veggies don't limit yourself! This is just from my experience and vitamins are the key as well

My tummy and thighs are problem areas as well. I went with a fitted pseudo A-line. The ruching helps to die the pooch. A little shapewear and you will look beautiful. Just remember FH loves you as you are. My baby pooch is 18 years old now. Smiley smile

Also please don't so an all veggie diet. The human body isn't built for that. You need protein and carbs. In fact they give you the longest lasting energy. Veggies will not give you everything you need.

Great advice- corset and boning are fantastic. Accessories make a huge difference- belts and boleros can help direct the eye to your smiling face and define your silhouette more.

Definitely don't eat only veggies for 2 months, unless you want to have tip totter or crawl down the aisle! I've found that cutting out sugar and processed flour helps a LOT within only 4-6 weeks. So I replace pasta with bulgur wheat, cut out bread and cookies, etc.

I was worried about my tummy showing but this dress hides it well. I'm still gonna try to take some weight off but still

Try on one of EVERY style. Mermaid, trumpet A-line sheath and ballgown. You may find you on best in something semi fitted. But you won't know till you go try. You can do it. You'll look beautiful. It's hard but someone else nailed it - this starts in your head.

Also please don't go all veggies unless you do some research on how vegetarians eat to fill their macros. (carbs fats and proteins) going all veggie takes work and if you aren't educated when going vegetarian you might do real damage.

Also. Crash diets are bad. You can be slowly make changes and do the work but know you'll be a beauty bride at any weight. And it's okay.

Girl, we've got this! I felt nervous trying on my dress too, but it's amazing how many fit me. I feel pretty self conscious about my body too. You are gonna be walking down that aisle in 53 days and the man of your dreams will love you no matter what dress you are wearing. Take the advice of PPs and definitely let your consultant offer help. They see brides of all shapes and sizes and may suggest something you would have never picked out, but end up loving.

Don't worry you will look beautiful! I've gained weight from my kids and my hysterectomy. Try on a bunch of different styles. I carry weight in my stomach and an a-line is what looked best on me.

Wow! You all look so beautiful in your dresses!!! I hope I have the same luck. Thank you so much for the tips!

We just got engaged on Christmas Eve. We've been together 10 years tho so we're just looking to make things official. That's why the March date.

I gained 70lbs when I had my daughter and lost it all within 6 months pretty easily. I gained about the same with my son but it's stuck with me.

FH has gained about 40lbs himself over the years.

This is my second marriage. My first I had an A line dress and loved it. Here's a pic from our wedding in Vegas.
