Over a year away, what can I do now???

Larry, on June 14, 2017 at 9:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

We've got our budget, venue (includes caterer and cake), photographer, engagement photos booked, general guest list (will be completely finalized closer to date of course), color scheme, basic registry items (my family requested we start early on this since they will be buying things off it for our engagement, birthdays, holidays etc.). Our ceremony location doesn't book dates until 12 months in advance, its a smaller church so I have no worries about it being booked. I started bridal gown shopping to get an idea of the style that I like and have made an additional appointment at another salon. We have a few vendors in mind but I also signed up for two Bridal Shows so we can meet and see other vendors.

What are some things that are acceptable to get done this early?? I'm a big planner and like to keep busy! I just don't know what I can actually do this early on. Any suggestions would be great!!

I'm in the same boat! Have the budget set, a general guest list, venue, photographer, and band. Maybe do decorations? I'm getting fake flowers and going to play around with different types of centerpieces.

Have you booked a DJ? Any other vendors you will want but haven't booked? Depending on your area, really good vendors are often booked a year out.

You could look into a DJ and a florist.

As long as you're very self aware and decisive, you can do it all now. But I caution you that once you've spent money you can't get back, STOP LOOKING at other options. You will kill yourself over dress regret, invitation regret, reception venue regret, etc., if you go Pinterest crazy on things you've already signed a contract or paid a deposit for.

If you're not sure exactly what you want yet, wait on those things. Wedding trends change from one season to the next, so something else could strike your fancy in a few months' time.

Are you designing your own invitations? Your own aisle runner? Any sort of DIY projects you want to do you can start researching.

I got engaged in December. I looked into and booked all my vendors and made most of my decisions by the end of Jan. Then I sat on my butt for a few months. When I hit 100 days left, I got back in gear to get the rest of everything done!!

We're leaning towards a local florist for decorations! They were recommended by the venue. We also went to a small bridal show and found a DJ company that we like (they have about 10-15 DJs and MCs) but want to wait for the upcoming bridal shows to see other Djs in person

@CaseyC. That's great advice...that's probably something I would do too. I tend to feel like I'm missing out on stuff, I fell in love with a dress but I feel like I could be missing something if I pick it now!

@jclo a diy aisle runner sounds like a great idea

You could start browsing music for your reception, first dance, etc.

Start on the DIY projects and wedding signs. I was told that they the take time and to give yourself the time to create/make mistakes/change your mind.

We are not getting married until October 2018 and we already have all of our vendors (venue, food, DJ, photos, hair and makeup) basically everything that books way in advance we already crossed off our list. I even have my wedding dress already. Right now we are just going through little things, we have started ordering some of the more expensive items and gifts to knock those out. Go through little things and work out a timeline for your venue and how you want everything to flow. We just did our food tasting last night to cross that off our list so we can make payments over the next year and a half instead of paying all that money at once.

You're the first date twin (possibly) I've seen!!!! FH and I were in the same boat. Found an amazing all inclusive venue that took care of everything besides bouquets. Theeen, we threw out the idea of a DW and have started over.

We still have option A with the local venue, but DW research has been fun! Def takes up some time haha.

    Enjoy your engagement now!!

Start getting ideas. Looking up vendors and going to bridal shows to try to win free stuff. Bridal shows are fun, you get to see and talk to people so you have better idea of what you want

I did the same thing! I wanted to plan a head because everything gets booked so fast. I would find the right DJ for you wedding but take your time doing that because you want to make sure they are the right fit. I would look for an officiant and get to know them so they can make your wedding personable. Congratulates btw!!

Sounds like you are doing great! You could start designing your save-the-dates, and possibly even wedding invites. Just to get some ideas early on, so when the time comes to send them (I know it's far off), you'll be all set. I couldn't wait to design mine because I love doing stuff like that.
