Outside wedding in a park, chairs or standing only?

PortlandBride, on June 8, 2010 at 12:48 AM Posted in Planning 0 32

My FH and I are having a small and quick ceremony, about 35 people, and should only take about 30 minutes.

However, I don't want to people to have to stand the whole time, but I am not really sure how to do the set up with chairs, I can rent the chairs for about $3 a chair, but how would I get it set up?

I guess I can call the park offices and see what other brides have done, if they even know, but figured I'd ask you ladies for ideas.

And speaking of my ceremony, this is what I have to look forward to on Jan 3rd... http://www.portlandonline.com/parks/index.cfm?c=52100&a=279498

Picture below is the area that hopefully I will get for my ceremony, this is facing from the front looking back to where my guests will be.

Chairs and most places that you rent from will set them up for you. I say chairs because even with only a few ppl your still going to have alot who can't handle standing that long (older ppl, disabled ppl, and children) Also it's much easier to get good pictures without all of the attendants in the way.

... I am in the same delema... we have opted to rent chairs however we must set up and tear down the chairs... Smiley sad We are renting 200... no more than that... so any one after that must stand... at one point we considered doing chairs for family and all our friends must stand... and if budget comes to it we might have to do that but I dont want to

Thank you ladies, that really helps confirm my thoughts.

If the rental company charges extra for set up and tear down, maybe I can recruit some trust worthy friends to set up for me. Or pay the extra and not have to worry about it.

I may for drop the sashes and do kissing balls on shepherd hooks instead.

@ Trish, I want to be sure people can see me in all my fabulousness Smiley winking

More to think about. Thank goodness I have time.

Honestly, if you trim down the ceremony a bit, I don't think you need to have a seat for every guest. You absolutely should have enough chairs for any elderly, disabled or pregnant guests. But most people won't mind standing for a short ceremony. Just my opinion and something to consider.

Yes i think you should have a seat for every guest. my neice went really cheap and we all had to stand during her vows, we got really tired, and i had high heels on.

white chairs are the best for a wedding, i usually see two sections of chairs on either side of the aisle. you can also rent a trellis at hobby lobby for like 50 bucks or less. $3 a chair is incredibly cheap!!! there is a company here charging 100 bucks a chair per day. to buy the nice chairs i want would run us 20 bucks each http://www.bizchair.com/info.html#shipping. if your rental chairs are not white i recommend you cover them with covers you can buy http://www.efavormart.com/?referral=adwords&kw=Wedding_Supplies&gclid=CLyPhZnMzpwCFRkMDQodylVVKQ&gclid=CMT8k6zcjKICFQ06agodiB3_WA (cheaper than i thought)

I vote for chairs as well. It just makes it more comfortable for your guests. And I'm sure friends wouldn't mind helping with set up.

Chairs, there are older family and friends that aren't able to stand for long periods. Plus, it will look better in your photos.

Caroline, I went through the same deal to get my park site, too! They don't start taking reservations until the last Friday in February. I was camped out in a wind and snow storm the night before so that I could be first in line! Good luck to you!

PS - I am just getting enough chairs for people who can not stand very long. It just seemed like too much of a debaucle for set up and tear down but our reception is at the same place as the ceremony, yours might be different.

Thank you. I will go ahead and do the chairs, and get some people to help me set up. Thank you all for your opinions and information.

It helps to run these things past people.

Oh it looks like some of those sites limit the amount of chairs you are allowed to have...I was looking at the wedding brochure link you sent over. You may want to double check that you can have that many. The ones I noticed said a limit of 12. Good luck!!

Great location! I vote for chairs too. I was at a wedding last May that was standing only and even though it was a quick ceremony I thought I was going to fall over.

It shouldn't be two hard to set up. Talk to the venue and rental company. If you do wind up having to set up yourself I'm sure friends, family, and maybe even the bridal party can set it out. For 35 people you can maybe even do a u shape around the bridal party so everyone feels like they are in the front row.

Yes I agree. I know that if I had to stand up that I would feel antsy and wish that I had a seat.

Chairs! I would reserve standing ceremonies as an option for beaches.

Use the chairs. Your park looks similar to the one we are marrying at. We are renting chairs and I am having my ushers set them up and my uncle (one of the ushers) will take them down and take them to my parents where they can be picked up Monday. It was going to cost us like $300-400 for them to set up and take down if we wanted it b/c they usually didn't have anyone working at that time so they would have to pay someone to come in and do it. But you don't want people to be standing for that long especially older ones & if it's hot out.

@ amberbean30 thanks for spotting that. I keep missing vital bits of information like that. I'll ask them when I go get the permit.

Use the chairs for sure. The rental place I'm getting mine from will setup the chairs for an additional 20 cents per chair

    Caroline,

I have the same dilemma and ended up deciding on chairs, and recruited my 3 BILs to help out. But something else I thought of, just because it goes with the relaxed theme of our wedding was blankets decorated with flower petals. And then a few chairs if need be on hand for those who couldn't sit on the ground.
