outdoor wedding without a tent

*~WiiFeY~*, on August 3, 2010 at 9:33 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

Soo FS and I went to visit this place that we heard about for our reception, and we pretty much fell in love. Its outdoors and on the water and gorgeous. But the only problem is.. Its pretty expensive. So expensive, that if we got a tent too it would pretty much take up our entire budget. So we did some brainstorming, and we both agreed that the place is really shaded, and even if its hot there would be enough shade to keep cool. But my parents are freaking out and really don't want to do something outside without the security of a tent-- which I understand.. But we can't afford it (and they DO agree with that lol)

We're going to have a plan B for rain anyway, so how do you ladies feel about having the reception outdoors without a tent?

Oh, and side note- we DO have access to small tents, that will cover the food/cake. So that part WILL be covered.. I'm attaching pictures of the place.

I would forget the tent, reception under the stars would be way more romantic to me. Find a nice way to define the perimeter with lights and you'll be all set. That place is gorgeous.

Tents serve as the "inclement weather backup plan" - can you use a bldg on the property if the weather is funky? I'd suggest checking weather websites for 5-10 years of averaged-out weather for 6/11/11 - heat, rain, and cold. Weather can't be controlled but the gamble of no tent backup may be less than you think. Are there other locations on the water that could be considered that do offer weather protection?

What a beautiful venue! Depending on time of reception maybe it won't be too hot.

If you have a different plan for rain, I think you'll be find with out a tent. The place is gorgeous and I think the beauty will be appreciated more without everyone under the tent the whole time.

Wow what a view! Pretty! I think you'll be fine as long as you have a backup plan in place.

Beautiful venue! I'm having an outdoor wedding and not using a tent either! It's the "dry season" where we are and looked at weather forecasts for the date. If it's typically dry where the venue is I'd say it's a pretty good gamble and just schedule the day so you miss the hottest part of the day. Since you have a back up plan in case of rain even better! Good luck!

It is beautiful, but having tables out in the open not covered would be weird. As long as they're under shade that will be fine. Or you can incorporate sunscreen into your centerpieces! I understand tents are $$$$, we looked at a place that required a tent and ended up going somewhere else where we can get married outside or on a covered porch if it rains. Is your food being prepared outside? because some states have health laws against that, the catering area would have to be covered, have a sink etc.

If I went to this reception, I'd want to be out under that beautiful sky. That place is gorgeous

I recommend having at least one extra "Sitting Tent" for elderly guests or those who have gotten dehydrated and need some shade immediately. You should probably also ask if you can have a few lounge style chairs for the Sitting Tent, again for first aid/fainting from heat/dizzy spell symptoms. The tent should be large enough to comfortably accommodate 5 people laying down if you have a guest list of 50 and keep that ratio as the guest list number goes up.

You should also have room temperature (not ice cold!) water bottles in that tent for dehydration and fainting spell victims. Room temp. water absorbs faster into the body, where ice cold water will just shock the system and make symptoms worse before it starts to help at all. To keep water bottle room temp. in hot weather, store them in the fridge the night before, then keep them in a cooler without any ice and in the shade.

Not having a tent is fine, just make sure to take emergency situations into account. Smiley smile

For me, the tent issue asn't that big a deal if weather cooperates (not to hot or raining). My bigger concern is eats up almost all of your budget! Where would you have to cut back and is it worth those cutbacks? I doubt the tents would be the only thing you'd have to sacrifice.

I'm not saying don't do it- but be prepared for being nickel and dimed elsewhere, and going over budget. Make sure you're ready for that!

Most tent companies will allow you to reserve the tent and then cancel it if the weather is nice. That way you can save most of the tent rental money (except for the deposit) if the weather is nice, but you have a backup plan if you need it. Our deposit is 25%.
