Outdoor wedding tent back-up

Lindsay, on December 12, 2012 at 2:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

We are thinking about doing a backyard wedding ceremony and reception. We are trying to decide whether or not a tent is a sufficient back up. Has anyone had to use a tent as a back up? How long does it take to set up? And will it withstand wind? Advice please!

The tent should be set up before the wedding, come rain or shine, though you might move your activities around based on the weather. They take hours to set up, and in all but the most extreme cases, they're great, if professionally done. But they can't be done in minutes.

They also have climate-controlled tents and tents with "walls" so they can be used during (for the most part) any type of weather!

Ok thanks for the suggestions. I love the way all the pictures look with lights strung between the trees and everything so I didn't really want to have it in the tent if we didn't have to. Do you know if they have tents where the sides can be lifted or removed. That way we can set it up regardless and it will still have the total outdoor effect. Thoughts?

I think the sides will "roll up" let me try and find a pic.....

Here's a couple pics... it's hard to tell about the sides.

    The girls above are correct.

But sometimes pricewise you're better off renting a back-up hall and decorating it as a contingincy plan. The tents can be over $1000 depending on size you might be better off going with a structure that already has heating, bathrooms etc somewhere nearby (just incase)

Amy is yours a backyard wedding also? Will you be hanging stuff from trees also? Have you found any pictures that might make me feel a little better about the looks of the tent?

Most tent sidewalls are attached by clipping to the strings within the tent. They can be removed but would take a few minutes. Our standard tents don't have "roll-up" sides, and I'm pretty sure most tent companies are like us. Sidewalls do cost extra, but are well worth it to provide protection, just in case.

The issue with finding a hall is the only nice one in our area is in a different state since we are on the il/in border. So we can't use the alcohol provided my an in company in il and our marriage license would be for Illinois. There's just a lot of complications with renting a hall. And I think the tent will still allow us to have the vision we want.

We offer a rain plan so that you can cancel the tent at the last minute if the weather forecast looks great. Your vendor may as well.

True. If it does not look like it is going to rain. Do you think I could set tables up inside. Then bar and cocktail tables outside? That way I can still have my vision and the tent too? Suggestions for set-up?

OMG Rayy_chull don't scare the poor girl! LOL.

We are using a tent (we have to) and are having it lined and have the option to include side walls. You can kind of see them in the picture on the left.

Hehehe it was the only thing I could find that explained the weird roll up walls I was seeing in my head!

For a second I wanted to have a tent on my parent's farm, but FH was all about going the ballroom route, so I gave him that (it's his wedding too, after all!).

It's really amazing to see what can be done with the tents now! You can do whatever you want. It can be casual, or super duper fancy! It's all up to you!

It doesn't hurt to have a roof no matter if it seems like it will rain or not, older folk might want shelter from teh sun, and at night if it gets chilly it could be nice to put a wall up or two while leaving the others down

I was told to reserve the tent at least 6 month before the wedding.. If you wait your not going to get one.

Is your wedding in Illinois? Or a surrounding state? Isn't it too cold, in November, for an outdoor wedding?

It won't be in November. Probably late summer.
