Outdoor wedding in June

Hello everyone I live in southern California and it gets pretty warm during summer. I'm thinking probably 90s to be honest. The venue is all outdoors though there is a patio of sorts with a roof where the reception will take place. The ceremony begins at 4:30 so I'm hoping it will start cooling down by then. I'm concerned though that it may be too hot still and am needing ideas of how I may help alleviate this. The dress attire will also be semi formal and I do not expect people to come dressed in floor length dresses and tuxes so maybe I could suggest on our wedding website wearing light clothing and warning people ahead of time of the venue set up and such?

I will be changing the time, adding an insert, updating my wedding website, and verifying with the guests to make sure they are aware of these updates. I will also provide some simple fans and make sure everyone is aware to wear light clothing.

Inside. Sorry. And in the summer? 6:30 won't be measurably cooler than 4:30.

Fans are not going to help.

Actually 6:30 I'd say does cool down a decent amount in my area. And seeing as how my options are limited I have to do something atleast

Check out weathercurrents.com. I've been using this to plan my wedding. It has "average" temperatures per hour in your area. It also has each year's temperatures on each day at each hour.

Last year at 6 p.m., it was 80 degrees and 30% humidity where you live on your wedding date. Plug that into a "heat index" chart. It comes out in the green zone. In other words, scientists think that is a fine temperature for babies and the elderly. Yay! However, since it's close to the "very warm" area (within 5 degrees), you probably want to have an indoor option/misting fans on reserve just in case it is unseasonably hot.

However, 4:30 p.m. would hit the very first rung of "very warm" on the heat index. According to science, the "very warm" zone means that there could be "fatigue POSSIBLE with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity." So people aren't going to be getting sunstroke, but still avoid anything in that zone.

I read through this whole thing before I posted to make sure I wasn't repeating....UMBRELLAS. I went to a wedding last summer and we sat in full sun for 45 minutes and I could not believe this beautiful, very expensive venue did not have freaking umbrellas for people. Those pretty "paper" ones for individuals (that can double as favors) and the big patio canvas ones that restaurants with outdoor seating use. Couple those with fans and you'll have a comfortable space for ceremony and reception.

I'm sorry but I would probably not attend your wedding if it was completely outdoors. How is this just coming to your attention? What was your rain plan? I have been to 2 outdoor ceremonies and both started after 5:00 and both were miserable. One even had the cocktail hour outside which made it even worse. I think the only way to really be able to pull this off would be to push the time back to after 6:30/7 as PP have suggested.

Anything over like 78 degrees is too hot for a large number of people to be outdoors in formal attire for.

Maybe do a very quick outdoor ceremony under a tent or another shaded area. You will need fans and ice cold drinks available for the duration of the ceremony.

Move everyone inside to the air conditioning after the ceremony.

@caitlyn it's a covered patio area so rain wouldn't be an issue.

@powers2 there is no inside. Only outside. I already posted above what I'm going to do since I'm limited on options at this point. Yes I take full responsibility. I am aware I messed up and I overlooked a very important factor but what's done is done.

Maybe you could push your wedding to later on in the afternoon. I'm am also having my entire wedding outdoors and though I live in the mountains area in Texas, it still gets hot in the summer. Since the sun doesn't set until about 9 during the summer, we're starting at 7. If it's too late to change the time, have plenty of refreshments, and maybe some tents can help. Definitely let people know and let's hope for 80 degree weather that day Smiley smile

I live in Ohio and went to an outdoor wedding last June (early June) and it was miserable. What's the alternative if it rains? does the patio area have sides?

4:30 will be just after the hottest part of the day. Is there any possible way to look at alternatives?

@bethyonce I'm moving the time down so hopefully it will be a bit cooler. Also the attire is semi formal so I'm going to let everyone know to wear light clothing

I know it's covered but there tends to be wind with rain quite often, causing sideways rain. That would be my concern.

If possible, move it indoors. As a native Angeleno, I can't imagine sitting in 90 degree heat with humidity and feeling sticky AF. Even 2 mins feels like an enternity. 1-4pm is peak heat. Is there anyway to push back your ceremony as the sun starts to set and it cools down??

Sigh....why do you kids do this? My partner did a wedding a few summers ago at one of the most expensive, exclusive venues along the Hudson river, with no inside / AC available. The couple probably spent 100,000.00 on this wedding, and everyone was freaking miserable from beginning to end.

At this point, you do what you can do OP, but let this be a lesson to everyone else planning.

Nope, anything over 70 is a no for me. How on earth are you just thinking of this now? Fans, light colored clothing and moving the time back wont help. I know its not what you want to hear but you need a new venue or a new date if you want people to enjoy your wedding.

Just because the patio is covered doesn't mean that rain won't be in issue. What if it's windy? The rain will be blowing across sideways. Anything along the outside will get wet from the rain dripping off the roof.
