Outdoor wedding ceramony...the music....how are you doing it?

Melissa, on February 5, 2010 at 6:18 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

So I already know some of you will be using an Ipod for your music...Great idea...how will you do it for an outdoor ceramony? How will you connect it to speakers big enough for the audiance to hear the music? I actually considered using a portable radio and burn a CD with the music..but IDK...sounds kind of tacky. Maybe considering a DJ just for the ceramony part, but now we are talking more $$$. How much would something like that cost? Just to play 3 little songs for the ceramony and thats it. It may be worth it if it's not too much. Any suggestions?

My cousin and her husband are muscians, they will be playing the guitar and violin for they ceremony. I don't think we're using speakers at all actually. But, I am going to look around to see what I can find. If any other posters know of a place where I cna rent or buy cheap wireless speakers and a mic that would be great!

Do you have good speakers? They sell things that connect the ipod to speakers (fh plugs his into his amp for backing music to his guitar and i know that will be loud enough bc i hear it with the door closed all the way across the appartment... but i will have to ask my fh where he got the cords.

Besides the music for the ceremony, you need to consider how your guests will hear the officiant and your vows. When you are outside the sound dissipates and your guests will not be able to hear what is being said. I know budget is always a consideration, but if you can afford it, hire a DJ so they can play the music in addition to putting a microphone on the officiant or the groom so your guests can hear. If you are hiring a professional videographer they will be able to capture the sound on their cameras via the microphone they put on the groom, but if you are just having a friend videotape it, they won't be able to capture the sound unless you have a DJ out there with speakers.

I would like to do steel drums. I found a guy, but I am meeting with him at the end of the month.

Are you having a DJ for the reception? If so, most of them will include a second "mini" sound system for the ceremony for an additional fee. (It's not really mini, it is just not the full blown set-up they do for the reception).

We are not having a DJ for the reception. Just a small sit down dinner. No dancing.

Our site has a sound system (hidden) in the gazebo and a loudspeaker because we are getting married on a little island in the middle of a pond and everyone else will be across the pond. You can't even see it. I dont think its tacky at all for a CD player. Hide it and the speakers or whatever behind some flower arrangements.

For the outdoor ceremony part we are doing the cd, in a cd player with some speakers hooked up. We plan to hide the thing under a table so that nobody will even see it and like you said, it's only going to be like 3 songs, I can't see hiring somebody just to do 3 songs.

Check Frontgate.com - they sell a $299 battery (6 hrs) & electric IPOD speaker w/ microphone and extra plug for an additional mic or electric guitar, it broadcasts to 150', has wheels and a handle (like a suitcase). You can use it at home after. We love ours - use it most every weekend at weddings if only to provide a mic for the minister. If you have access to electric regular sound systems can be adapted to an IPOD w/ an RCA adapter, available at Radio Shack.

We're purchasing that sweet little Bose iPod dock. I've been told that the sound quality is exceptionally good.

If your Wedding Ceremony is outside, there should be a back-up AV plan for inclement weather. Regardless of indoors or outdoors, this event will require at least one lapel microphone on the officiant. If there is an exchange of more than just the minimum vows, I recommend another lapel mic to be placed on the groom. This microphone would pick up the brides vows as well. Lapel microphones present lots of challenges and should only be used in the PA system when an AV technician is present.

For a Beach Ceremony, a quality DC powered 100 watt or more PA system is recommended. That is because the beach can be very calm and quiet or it can become louder with wind and waves from day to day. Better to prepare for the later. Again, 1 or 2 lapel microphones (DC powered) will be required with an onsite AV tech. Your AV tech will coordinate with your planner on your pre-ceremony music and assist with any live musicians. NOTE: The reason for the DC powered equipment is that there is typically no electricity on the beach. There is the option of running generators but then of course, you have that noise to contend with or conceal.
