My wedding is taking place at the beginning of August. The ceremony and reception will be on my parents property in large tents. We live and are getting married in New England so we planned on having the tents air conditioned because, well if you’re from New England you know what August here is like(HUMID!). Since we’re not have me a “venue” in the traditional sense, we’re relying on a lot of outside vendors and contractors for EVERYTHING. The place we are renting the tents from said it will be about $10,000 to air condition the 2 tents we’re having. We contacted a different company not related to the tent company and they quoted us about $8000. My parents are paying and have basically said “Nope, not happening. That’s way too much”. My fiancé and I don’t exactly just have $8,000- $10,000 lying around either.

Would it be terrible to have a wedding in tents...in August...in New England...not air conditioned? What’s been other brides/ wedding guest experiences at weddings like this? We’re not reconsidering the venue or time of year so that’s not an option either. We’re particularly worried about the reception since everyone will be is close quarters, the cake could melt, no one will want to dance, things like that.

August on the East coast is humid and brutal. You have to be pro-active with your own wedding. It's fine to have a planner but you need to keep your thinking cap on as well and stay involved in the whole process and don't be afraid to question your planner, make suggestions and executive decisions. At the end of the day this is your event. Old people (like me), folks on medication and little kids can't do extreme temperatures.

You can buy portable air conditioning units from $400 to $600 each. If you bought 2 per tent that would only be $2500 as oppose to $10,000. Get the men in your family including your Fiance to figure out how they can get this to work with your venue. If you need to pay the light bill from that day, let them send you the bill. Much cheaper than spending $5,000 or $10,000. When the wedding is over, sell the portable AC units and recoup your money.

Portable AC Unit - around $400-$600 12,000 btu

At the very least you can buy about 10 to 15 professional industrial grade fans to help out. It will make it hard for anybody to hear themselves or the wedding toast and other announcements without getting a PA system of some sort.

If the cater has not ordered the food, you can change it. You can change the Justice too, if he/she can't do that time, find another Justice who can.

What an awfully cynical judgmental community here in WeddingWire! Such a disappointment.
I’ve been to several outdoor summer weddings here in New York City (If anyone knows what summer is like in ny, it’s def worse than anything north of us like New England area) with no AC because it was truly outdoors and everyone had a great time. In fact, there was one I attended in August which was truly the best wedding I’ve been to. The couple offered guests yummy Italian icys on the dance floor and extra cold desserts throughout the event. We partied, danced and sweated our butts off into the wee hours. And guess what? No one died (insert roll eyes here)! A bride should do whatever her hearts desire and if guests for some reason can’t bear a few moments of discomfort well then they can leave early and miss out on a grand fun night.
Come on guys let’s be more supportive and provide unique fun interesting ways to make sure that a bride’s special day is indeed a remarkable beautiful one. I thought that’s what this site was about anyways.

I would love to be able to specify air conditioning in a wedding venue database search.
