Out of state wedding.

MrsOHara, on March 2, 2014 at 11:12 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

Ok so my husband and I are already legally married however we are doing our big ceremony in October. I for him decided to do it in the state where his family is from so that they could come. I actually have some family from there as well so it at first didn't seem like such a bad idea. However now as people are receiving the save the dates I keep getting the same response "I will try my best to make it." I am so scared that none of my friends will show up other than my wedding party and my family. Which honestly hurts me because I have gone out of my way to go to all of their weddings in the past. And not only that I hired a babysitter to watch all of the kids for those of my friends who have kids and couldn't find a babysitter. So I feel I have gone above and beyond to make it as easy as possible for everyone. I do understand that time and money is tight for everyone but I feel like its not that difficult. I will honeI know you don't know me but am I sounding unreasonable? I hope not

As someone who also goes above and beyond to be there for my friends and family: no, I don't think you're being unreasonable. But, realistically, you're going to have quite a few no's and no shows and "I'll see if I can make it" and never coming.

My wedding is 7 hours from my hometown, but I already know who to REALLY expect and who I'm just inviting as a formality. Imo, People who really want to be there, will be! We're inviting 230, expecting 150

I think its normal to feel that way but realistically not everyone will look at it as you do. Since only the save the dates are out and the wedding is in October they may not want to commit on a definite answer quite yet and will wait until they get the formal invite. Just be patient and don't worry about it. Smiley smile

I am in TN but my wedding is in TX where my FH lives and the only people that will be there are his huge family, my parents, my brother and mutual friends. The people I would invite from TN are elderly and can't travel.

We are having an out of state wedding (eloping) on October 3, and then a big reception back in our hometown on November 8. Family who want to come to the wedding can, but we're not sending out invitations or hosting a reception afterward. We are springing for an awesome videographer to capture the wedding preparations and ceremony and we will show it on a large screen at the reception as the prelude to our entrance. Our invitations and STDs don't mention the actual wedding date, just the reception. Videographer needs the 5 weeks to edit the video and set it to our ceremony music.

First of all, If you're already married, why are you having another wedding? That's a bit rude, on the etiquette scale. Secondly, if you want you family and friends to be there, you should he something close by, and you shouldn't be calling it a "wedding" since you are already married. You can have a celebration, but it isn't technically a wedding.

How is that rude we disnt have a wedding we had a 4 min legal session with a judge telling us we were man and wife! We did it because he is in the military and getting deployed and no friends or family were there. We are having an actual wedding so that we can have our friends and family there to celebrate our love with us! Also I am doing it in the state where my husbands family lives so they will be able to go! Sorry but I dont see anything rude about the situation at all!

How is what you had not an "actual" wedding? Are you not currently married? Because if you are, then you had a wedding. Am I incorrect? Please correct me if you are not currently already married...

All a wedding is, really, is a legal joining of two people. There is no rule that there has to be a big party or celebration.

The day you get legally married is your wedding day. You are technically having a vow renewal. That may be the reasoning behind the unenthusiastic responses.

Well whatever it is it my celebration not anyone elses so there is really no need for any of the rude comments from anyone who are saying that I didn't already have a wedding because to me yes I realize I am already married but I did not have a wedding. I did not walk down an aisle, I did not say any vows in the presences of GOD and and I def did not do anything in front of my friends and family. And if I read the question correctly it wasn't about whether or not I am already married it was about the concern of who is going to show up to WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE MY WEDDING CEREMONY!!!!! Thanks so much Smiley smile

I can understand you being frustrated. I sometimes find myself wishing that my friends and family would care more about my wedding day. No one cares as much about your wedding day as you do. Your day is going to be special. For other people, it seems so far away. I'm sure the people that matter to you will genuinely try to celebrate with you.

I cant believe how rude some of these commenters are!! I am also legally married because I needed a visa to move overseas with my husband. We didn't have time to have the wedding we wanted before we left so our W-E-D-D-I-N-G will be March 30th! And March 30th will be our anniversary. We still occasionally call each other finacé still also. No government document will tell us what our relationship to each other is!

Now to your comment - I was extremely reluctant to have a destination wedding because I was afraid my friends and family wouldn't be able to come. My fiancé talked me into it because his family is from near Puerto Vallarta and we were hoping his grandmother could make the trip. Now that we're a month out and know who is coming Im really touched that so many people are making the trip! Am I disappointed that there are some people who wont be there? of course but I know when it comes down to it, its not personal and everyone has to decide whats best for them. Don't stress about it yet and just be your usual helpful self, and give some guidance and help for your friends to find affordable travel and accommodations. I think in the end you'll be pleasantly surprised who's there on YOUR big day!!

I moved to AZ in August, and we are essentially having a destination wedding (about 8 people of FH's famly live here, and that's it)! A lot of people I didn't think would make the extra efforts are going to be here! Some people weren't able to get away, but it was understandable.

We invited about 350, and will be expecting 111, which is exactly what we wanted. There are some pros to destination weddings. It's more intimate and will help keep the budget in check.

People aren't required to respond to STDs. It's just sort of a heads up that you're getting married on x date in y place so they can start planning travel and a place to stay. They may not have that stuff in place yet, I wouldn't worry about it until you send out invites.
