Ordering wedding dress size down?

SpringBride23, on June 12, 2018 at 6:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22
So I’m curious, has anyone actually ordered their dress a size down? I’m currently working on becoming healthier and I’m concerned my dress size may be totally wrong. I’ve lost about 20 pounds so far, however my “goal” is to lose around 50 more. If I order my dress to my current size, how will it go later if I need a dress a few sizes smaller? I’m worried the dress won’t look right or I’ll send hundreds to get it altered.

I ordered my dress in the size that was correct to my measurements and it was STILL super tight. I would definitely not order down.

I tried on a size 4 and she had it clipped so much that she ordered me a size 2. So that’s what I’m waiting to come in. I’m extremely nervous that I’ll gain more weight and not fit into it

Not on purpose. I was sized at a 6, tried and 8 and ordered a 10 and it doesnt fit. I would have ordered another size up if I knew it were that small and tight. Please dont order a size down. I have had so much anxiety and stress and worry about this dress being too small

I ordered a size down because lord knows why that's how my dress is made. I'm a street size 14 but my measurements made me fit into a size 12 for my gown.
But that decision was made based on current measurements. I wouldnt order a size down on the promise that Ill lose weight by then (cause honestly, I havent lost a pound)

I've ordered a size down when I found out that David's Bridal can only take in the dress two sizes. On try on date I was a size 14 but after losing 20lbs I'm now a size 10. The size 10 that I ordered fits perfectly but I want to be a 6 or an 8. But now it's more flexible. I still need to lose another 10-15lbs to be at my goal weight.

I will say that it has caused a lot of stress and worry about not being able to fit into a dress since you can't really go up a size with such little fabric.

    Long story short:

I ordered a size up from my goal size...

Congrats on the weight loss! I know it's a tough journey!! I haven't lost a ton of weight. But I tried on a size 10 wedding dress. It fit perfectly everywhere except my butt. They weren't able to release enough material for it to fit around my butt. I weight lift, so that area only ever gets bigger on me. I had to order a size up and now I will end up spending quite a bit in alterations, but to me that's a better option than buying a dress too small and having to buy a new one anyway. I would also consider your timeline and what you can realistically lose in the time you have left. If you've already lost 20 pounds, how long did that take you and do you think you'll stay on the same track or slow down? I would consult someone that works at a bridal shop. They've seen it all and may be able to give you some pretty good advice. I wish you the best of luck on your journey and best wishes for your wedding!

I honestly wouldn’t go down... How far out is your wedding?? I am a street size 6 but fit perfectly a bridal gown size 10 except in the hips. I ordered a size 12 and made alterations. It fits perfectly at the fitting but I’ve gained and lost in the last few months so I will be ok. If you are say 4-6 months out I would order your current size. If longer then you have the wiggle room.

I had the same experience! They definitely measured me to the exact centimeter, and there wasn’t a ton of extra room Haha!

Everyone I know who has done this has regretted it. If you lose weight, you can normally have the dress taken in. But if you buy the dress too small, a) you may not lose as much weight as you hope, and b) the weight may come off different parts of you unevenly, so some parts may still be too tight. It's far easier to take a dress in than to let it out.

It is much easier to complete alterations on a dress that is too large than on one that is too small. You my wish to consider shopping in a few months if you still have a few months you can wait before ordering your wedding gown and are fearful that you will continue to drop dress sizes. If you are closer to your goal when you purchase your gown, you may be less likely to require extensive alterations. Best of luck!

I lost 30 pounds when I bought my dress so I ordered a size down in hopes to lose more. I just picked it up 2 weeks ago and it fit amazing! I lost about 15 pounds since I purchased it.

I think I'm a little different, since my dress is custom but...my bust measured at an 18, my hips and bum at a bridal 10. I am having it custom made to my measurements, but the way it worked is the bust is basically an 18, the hips and bum are a 12. Alterations will be made. I fit into a regular size 10 of the mock up, up until my bust, so paying extra to have it custom just made sense. I spoke directly with the designer and this was her recommendation.

So...just follow measurements and what the designer recommendations are (NOT necessarily the store, itself--like I said, I have a couture gown, but have had to do David's Bridal for weddings and they have almost always screwed me.)

Oh and I'm a DDD/G in my bust, but a 4/6/27 in my waist, street sizing.

I'm a street size 10. The only sample they had was an 18. It was huge, but I fell in love with the dress. The bridal salon did not even give me a choice in what size they ordered. When the dress arrived I found out it was a 12. This 12 is cut very funny. It's way too big in the bust, but too tight in the back. Just doesn't make sense. Please don't order down. Oh! And my alterations are running $ 1000.00. I'm not the happiest of campers.

I ordered the size I tried on in the store, which was also my street size 18. I recently lost 25 lbs, I was the same size before and after. Hoping to lose more. It's from David's they said if you change more than 2 dress sizes and there's time they will do a size exchange. If it 2 or less they make you pay for alterations though. If I'd known the dress would only take 2 weeks to come in I would have waited another couple of months to at least lose another 20 lol.

You can always take away fabric, but you can't add it. At the time of me ordering my dress I was a size 6, which is what i ordered.. but I lost 40lbs in the last year so now I'm a size 2. Alterations were $300 to bring it down to size. my seamstress was telling me the biggest mistake is for brides to order down because adding fabric is way harder and takes more $$$

I’ve lost 30 lbs with the intent of losing 15 more. I order my dress in the size that fit and that is a very good thing, because I have not lost the next 15 lbs lol. I am currently working on it, but I recommend getting the dress in your current size and then taking it for alterations before your wedding.

I lost 15 lb between the day I picked up my dress from the salon and my wedding day. The dress fit perfectly on my wedding day, it just lay better (it was a fit and flare) than the day I picked it up. I wouldn't order a size down for sure. Get measured for the size you are when you buy the dress then you can always take it in.

The dress i tried on was tight, i ordered a size down, and they still just had to take in two inches. i’m very glad i didn’t order the size that fit then (8 months earlier) as i’ve lost at least 50lbs and the dress would be very misshapen.

I wouldn't buy a size down, you can't guarantee that you will uniformly lose weight over your whole body. You might drop a lot of weight from your stomach and arms but not your thighs etc. and be stuck not fitting into it. I'd find out when you need to order by and then wait as late as possible to order. You'll still need to take it in but hopefully not too much
