Opinions Please - dj - Small Crowd

Serena, on February 8, 2020 at 7:15 AM Posted in Planning 0 8
Hello All!

FH and I are having a semi DW in May. We invited a small crowd, close friends and just parents. About 25 to 30 people. We booked a boat for a sunset cruise for our reception. So here's the question. Is it weird to have a DJ for such a small group? I've read mixed opinions on other forums from years ago, but what do you brides think?Us and our friends LOVE to dance! We'll have plenty of food and plenty of booze. Since our whole wedding has been self paid, the DJ would be a gift to us if we chose one, so cost isn't an issue there.
The boat is also equipped to handle a DJ. They do "party cruises" and bachelor parties.
Let me know what you think!
Thank you!

Yes I would do the DJ! They can read the crowd and a set playlist can’t do that. Plus they can make any announcements if you are doing anything like cake cutting, first dances, tosses, etc.

If your crowd loves to dance, then YES! Get a DJ. 💃

I agree. If your crowd loves to dance it just makes sense to have a DJ. Just because you haven't invited the world doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to party the night away.

No crowd is ever to small for dancing!! Hey the DJ and have a blast. Ours is going to be about 30-40 people as well and we are thinking of either live music or a DJ. (Or both 🤣) do what will make you happy on your day. 🥰🥰

Yesss!! Thank you ladies! I know FH and I will have SO much fun. Our group is lively and even my mom's excited lol. I just care too much about what others think and don't want people talking about how "uneccessary" it was to have one... I know, its my day and I shouldn't care lol

I think you definitely should hire a DJ. For two reasons, 1. It’s a know your crowd thing - you’ve said your guests like to dance. If you knew a majority of your guests are unlikely to dance, that’d be something to consider. 2. You & your FH want a DJ - I’ve really had to learn thru out this wedding planning process to make the decisions based on what’s important to us. Not what others want or expect.

To add onto that, like others have said - having a DJ to keep the flow of the evening going is really helpful. He/she can announce when toasts are being made, first dance, etc.
