Opinions on Juicing?

Amanda, on September 6, 2017 at 3:27 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 46

My wedding is so so close and though I look ok, I don't look as fit and trim as I'd like.

I have PCOS and hypothyroidism, making it harder for me to lose weight. In high school and college and I was super thin and this condition crept up on me just 3 years ago.

I have an elliptical and I eat pretty healthy, but once in awhile when FH brings home something unhealthy it's hard for me ignore! Has anyone tried juicing? There's a juicery in my town but it's really expensive ($200 for a 3 day cleanse).

I'd like to try it for 2-3 weeks (and hope I can last that long!). Has anyone done a cleanse or juiced for a longer period? I'd love to hear your experiences.

Please don't. Just eat less. Juicing doesn't do anything magical for you, it will just make you hate life. Lol. Also "cleanses" aren't really a thing! They don't "cleanse" anything it's just juice

Please do not attempt to do a juice cleanse for 2-3 weeks! These cleanses "work" because you are severely limiting your calories. There is nothing special about juice. This is just a crash diet. I would talk with your doctor before trying something like this, especially since you have other health issues.

In no universe would I pay 200.00 for 3 days worth of juice. Well, maybe if it was wine...

Juice has calories and calories count. You're really better off with a balanced plan and regular exercise.

Cleansing absolutely works, but really it is just dehydrating you. Malnourished isn't really pretty. Just cut back on all carbs and limit meat. Veggies, fruits, water...

    Don't do it. Full stop.

Juicing depletes your protein stores, drains your immune response, and in the long-run disrupts your bowel regime. Save your money and buy some fruits and veggies.

Also @Traci: cleansing doesn't work. If you have at least 1 kidney and 3/4 of a liver you're body takes care of itself. Plus what are you cleansing? We don't eat toxins, unless you're chewing on tin cans or lead pipes.

And please don't "eat less" .. just eat healthy foods, lots of veggies and moderate fruit, lots of water. Restricting yourself of calories helps nothing, you store fat and you are hungry and cranky.

My friend tried juicing before her wedding, it almost broke them up.

In all seriousness, though, juicing isn't a particularly good way to lose weight. You're mostly just pumping yourself full of sugar but leaving out the fiber that makes you feel full (even when you're making your own juice). As soon as you stop it'll come right back on, and in the meantime you'll be miserable and unhealthy. You'd be better off doing something like intermittent fasting where you eat healthfully, just less and at certain times. Hypothyroidism is really hard, you could try talking to your doctor to see if there's particular diets that might work better for you (i.e. low carb vs. low fat, etc) or a nutritionist.

You'll lose weight that you will gain back plus some after the juice "cleanse" is over. Also, juicing strips all the fiber you normally get from eating raw fruit and you're essentially consuming a bunch of sugar. Don't do this....

@Erin. thanks for the CV. If you're telling me that giving yourself diarrhea for a few days doesn't make you shed a few pounds, then I'm not really sure how to respond. At no point in my response did I 1) recommend cleansing or 2) relate that its a good idea or 3) indicate that the loss would be more than temporary.

It doesn't change the fact that you will INDEED lose weight by juicing.

**Please folks, read an entire entry before responding.**

Actually. Eating less, (and/or moving more) is literally what causes people to lose weight.

No no no. Juice seriously has no place in a sustained weight loss plan. If you want to use a juice cleanse to look up to like, 8 lbs thinner, you can definitely use they to shed all that in water weight and you will look skinnier for about one day. But not only WILL it be miserable for you, all that water weight will come right back as soon as you eat a real meal.

As for regular juicing/juice meal replacement in an effort to sustain weight loss (not as part of a cleanse), you are much better off drinking water and eating nutritious meals. Juicing fruit eliminates the fibrous, filling part of the fruit and compresses it into large amounts of sugar (sinc eyou need a lot of fruit to make a glass of juice). Juicing veggies also cuts down the fiber and you'd do better just to eat veggies, as your body will absorb the nutrients better when they have a chance to sit in your stomach for longer (not to mention that the more volume the veggies have, the more volume they take up in your stomach and the fuller you feel).

I would definitely NOT juice. Especially with a thyroid problem (I also have hypothyroidism after they radioactively killed part of my hyperactive thyroid). Have you checked with a endocrinologist to make sure you are at a healthy level? Once they fixed my medications, I dropped a few lbs. that I gained while regulating my hormones.

ETA: Try a raw food diet for a few days instead, don't skimp on meals just eat unprocessed and natural foods

Last time I checked, giving yourself diarrhea is not an optimal weight loss strategy
