Opinion on Wine/Alcohol

Amber, on April 3, 2017 at 11:47 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 30

The venue where my fiance and I are getting married does not provide the alcohol so we have to bring our own. I need opinions on getting boxed wine such as Franzia? I don't want our guest to think we are cheap but at the same time I would rather buy that then bottles. Opinions please!

I would so be ok with boxed wine! I think as long as you are providing some sort of wine you are ok! :-)

ETA: This is also a know your crowd type thing, if you have a lot of wine drinkers who know their wines you might want to go with bottles.

Instead of Franzia, which is not the best wine (imo :-) ), have you looked into Black Box? The wines are great for the price and less expensive than bottles

Oh, please anything but Franzia. Go to a good wine store in your area and discuss with them your budget. They can help find something affordable and palatable.

I think boxed wine screams cheap in my opinion... you're better off with inexpensive bottles , go to a local wine/liquor place and get suggestions

I don't think you can have wine boxes and not look cheap

But if you're set on boxes then just go for it ... it's better than cash bar or dry wedding

Our venue is doing boxed wine, lol. Some of it is better than the stuff in the bottles so I disagree with what the above poster said. It just depends what you get, franzia probably won't be.

Good boxed wine (like Black Box, as Lauren suggested) can be better than cheap wine in glass bottles.

Skip the Franzia though. No one needs a throwback to cheap college parties!

See i thought boxed wine would look cheap too. But i also do not want to spend 15$ a bottle!! So I will have to find good cheaper wine in a bottle!

I'm a fan of fish eye, they also have bottles. There's cheap Trader Joe's bottles as well, I think $2-3/bottle. If you decide to go with boxes, see if you can get decanters or something nicer than the box to pour from.

Box wine has come a LONG way. But not Franzia- that stuff still tastes like shit.

I'd absolutely drink box wine (And do at events) but not Franzia- please don't.

Nothing wrong with boxed wine! I used to work in the wine department at a liqour store in a high-end neighborhood. Some of our wealthier costumers would stock up on boxed wine for events. I recommend Black Box over Franzia though. Smiley smile

I second black box. I wouldn't side eye if that were the option. I totally get saving money but I would pass up franzia.

Thank you everyone!! I will not being buying franzia. I am going to get some bottles and different brands and choose that way. I hate to be cheap but I am having close to 250 guests so I am trying to save money but still buy good wine!

You can definitely find good wine for under $15 a bottle (and this is coming from a wine snob Smiley winking) You can get a really good Rose from Cote de Provence France for under $10, and who doesn't love a rose?? J.L. Quinson is $8 at Trader Joe's and it's really good. I am personally a red drinker, and Cloud Break Pinot Noir (CA) is only $8 at Total Wine and More. Its the best value Pinot I have found, and I serve it to my friends when I host at home after we have the "good stuff" so we don't waste the expensive wine after our palette is shot Smiley winking

Do you have any wine shops in your area? Some offer a discount if you buy by the case. Also, ask them if they allow you to return unopened bottles. That way you can make sure you have plenty and don't run out -- but don't stress about over buying. Good luck!

I'd see no issue with boxed wine. Alcohol is alcohol lol but if you want to make sure it's going to be good wine, definitely take the advice the other PPs have gave you. I'm not a big wine drinker, so I have no input lol

I would look somewhere that you may buy wholesale and get a few cases of different wines. Sometimes they will let you return unopened bottles or unused cases of wine as well, depending on what state you live in. Black box wine is also ridiculously good for it boxed wine and I wanted to echo the suggestion for it.

If you do get some bottles, Apothic Red is awesome and very affordable. I wanna say like $10 a bottle. Second @Grace's idea to check Costco! I also like a website called Wine Insiders. If you get on their mailing list, they have crazy deals for mixed cases of wines. Typically around $75 for 12 bottles, give or take, and I've never been disappointed.

We had Three Wishes wine at our wedding. It's sold at Whole Foods and is $3 per bottle.

Two Buck Chuck is always a choice! You could also try to talk to a local winery (if they are near you, I'm a spoiled CA girl) and see what it costs to get a case. They may give a discount, just to get their names out there.

Serve it from a wine decanter, not the box, and you'll be fine. Black box though, not franzia.

Check with liquor stores. We just found ours and they have been supplying our particular venue for years and they knew the amounts and we walked away paying 1500.00 for alcohol alone. He takes back anything we don't use.
