Opening a preserved dress

Andrea, on October 13, 2013 at 5:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3

Hey everyone, this is my first post! My fiancé and I just got engaged and we're starting to plan.

I want to wear my mother's wedding dress. It was professionaly preserved and has been in a bridal chest untouched for 30 years. The problem is that the company that preserved it no longer exists. Obviously the warranty can't be honored, but we don't know how to go about opening it. We're afraid of damaging the dress. Any recommendations. We live in the Queens, NY area.

Call a local cleaners or place that currently does wedding gown preservation and see what they recommend.

Usually you just cut the sealed tape and open the box. You can't really hurt the dress if you're careful with the tape and don't puncture the actual box.

Open it carefully? my mom opened hers (after being preserved for 26 years) because she wanted me to try it on and she wanted to try it on again. we just did it at home. I had my own dress though, so she just took her dress to the bridal store where I bought my dress and had them re-preserve it. she took mine there too after my wedding.
